The Ancient Runes CLass was probably one of the oddest classrooms a student could come across. Moreover this was because it was the only room that had its desks planted around the walls of the classroom with a clearing in the centre of the floor. Upon the floor were twenty slabs of dark grey stone cut into almost perfect squares. Almost perfect because they were also rounded at the edges. Big enough for someone to stand in, but quite easy too fall of if you did not have good balance. Professor Emerindyl was at the front of the class with a book of Runes in his hand and a peice of chalk in the other. His glasses were slightly ascew as he moved along the blackboard writing a charm next to the Square he had drawn; May I stand as an island in the marsh as a hill in the plain as a tree in the elfmound as a star in the moon's waning as a still sword in the hand as a child beloved of its ancestors in the midst of the grove brave before the host. Moving to the square he then drew a very simple rune which he stood back to ensure he had done correctly; Nodding in approval he stepped back from the blackboard to see the twenty tablets laid out in four rows of five on the floor. The bell sounded. He looked towards the door briefly, wondering who would be first to class.

Andreas sauntered into the classroom knowing that while he would be the first one in the classroom he was not entirely interested in drawing the attention of a keen student to himself. He noticed the slabs on the floor and recognised their purpose at once. This meant today’s lesson would be a practical one and so he did not remove his books from his bag.
Making his way to one of the tables he took his bag from his shoulder and sat it precariously upon the currently bare surface looking back to greet the Professor, “Good morning sir,” was all he said, all he really needed to say. He knew the Professor would undoubtedly say nothing about their lesson until the rest of the class arrived.
He looked up at the door as he waited wondering who else had chosen Ancient Runes as an elective this year. As it was an elective class and not one common students would choose unless they didn’t already understand the amount of work likely involved.

Barnak stood on the far side of the corridor outside the Ancient Runes class, slightly offcentre from the door, half-melted into the shadows and squinting to read the Professor's chalked words. He had no idea what they meant, and the symbol meant equally little to him. This wasn't a class listed on his timetable, and the boy who had just entered was a couple of years his senior. He shifted his schoolbag across to his other shoulder and stayed lurking in the corridor, uncertain what to do.

Shane was on his way to Ancient Runes, he had not taken the class before but knew it was an elective open to him. He also knew he had a free period which occurred on all of he scheduled lessons of this class and so had decided that it was an elective he might participate in. Most of his friends had also chosen to attend this class out of curiosity more then anything else. So when a group of fourth year Saphricorn’ past a young Ruberagon lurking just outside the door, the five of them started laughing before moving forward into the classroom wondering what creepy little things, the creepy little kid might be up to while everyone else was in class. “Morning Professor,” he and the rest of his friends greeted the professor in shattered unison as they made their way into the room and congregated around some of the desks against the wall to the left.

Barnak's eyes glittered with rage as he watched the filthy Saphricorns enter the classroom, full of mirth, mirth directed at -him-...
His hand went to his wand, but as he took a step forward Professor Emerindyl came into his line of sight, and he lowered his hand slowly. He watched them finding their seats and carefully memorised each of their faces. He would have to find them again at a more appropriate time, and show them clearly the punishment for mocking a Ruberagon.
Barnak stepped back into the shadows beside the door and returned his focus to the board.

Lucius arrived at the class shortly after the bell had sounded. He had not particularly been looking forward to this class, though he knew it was one he would be expected to complete to gain any position in the department of the Ministry of Magic, that he was sure he would be accepted into after graduation. He was walking along the hall by himself. None of his group had taken Ancient Runes; they had all taken the softer option of Divination, which was on at the same time as this class. He had no interest in Divination; he had always known the subject to be utter rubbish.
As he headed towards the classroom door he saw a younger Ruberagon student skulking around by the door. He only knew the kid had been in his house because of his attire, he had not seen this kid before, though to be perfectly honest, he had no desire to notice those in the younger grades, not if he didn’t have to anyway.
He stopped by the door before walking in. He didn’t look at the boy right away, but did so when he remembered something he was supposed to do. His grandfather had told him about a new student, a first year. But his name was… something Quillhippogriff maybe… he wasn’t sure. He stopped by the door anyway thinking he should tell the boy that skulking was not a habit worthy of getting into. He decided against this though, turning and looking directly at the boy with darkened stern looking eyes.
“Are you joining the class or not?” he said casting the boy a look that said quite clearly, ‘join us or leave’ he thought it was an appropriate enough statement before he turned away from the boy without waiting for a verbal answer and entering the class to stand idly by the door noticing not everyone was sitting. He knew what the tablets were of course, and knew that sitting would be a waste of time.

Barnak looked at the older boy, at his robes, recognizing him as an older student and a fellow Ruberagon, and ignored the boy's rudeness. Barnak watched him enter the classroom, and after a moment he took a tentative step out of the shadows, straightened his robes, lifted his chin, and went in after him.
He looked around at the classroom, at the tablets, and followed the example of the other Ruberagon. He felt young, surrounded by older students, but he was determined to show up the group of Saphricorns that had insulted him earlier. He glanced at the teacher, but Professor Emerindyl hadn't made any move to kick him out of the class, so he went back to reading the board.

Elouise had chosen Runes as an elective class. She was fascinated by the branch of magic that few witches or wizards ever took notice in knowing that it would in fact be something of a learning curve, but also something that would prove beneficial in the future, it was not a soft option class, and she knew she would be learning a lot.
As she approached the class room she hesitated seeing a younger student walk in, was he a first year? Was this the right classroom, moving closer to the door she noticed Shane Moonraker and Lucius Sinister, deciding this meant she was welcome, she walked in smiling as if she had never hesitated. Curious for what she might be learning today.

“Greetings to each and everyone of you and welcome to Ancient Runes, I am happy to see a few returning faces to this subject and am more pleased to see a few new students also, I think, as time moves on as it does, all of you will gain an understanding for runes and will even find, possibly while performing tasks you could never have expected, that runes of the ancient world can come in quite handy,” he addressed the class from where he stood in front of the blackboard, his sweeping robes of emerald green and gold moved around him like thick drapes contoured to his sturdy appearance.
”In ancient runes you will discover a branch of magic that is quite unlike wand casting, or even wandless casting, you will find it entirely different to charms, defense against dark arts and transfiguration, though with ancient runes you can perform all of the above,” he said as a little green piece of chalk started scribing his words on the blackboard suggesting that the class should begin taking notes.
”This rune you see before you here, will be the first one you will be learning about, but first, I am not so kind or so ignorant to believe you all know nothing, and so I enquire, is there a person in this room who might be able to give us some knowledge, even limited on the run we can all see here?” he didn’t really expect anyone to answer, though he had had cases before when he began showing something to a whole class of people who didn’t know a thing about it, only to discover at the end of the class a student had been silent the whole time about her vast knowledge on the topic and had merely wasted an hour listening to it again.
”Anyone? Have a guess even if you only think you are right, you are never wrong, you have just discovered one more thing that it isn’t,” he smiled as he looked around politely curious tp see whether anyone might answer.

As unfortunate as it had to be, Elouise was no help to Professor Emerindyl at this point, she didn’t know what the rune meant, she had never done runes before, she had only joined this class because the Headmaster was teaching it and she thought it might be interesting. Though she realised, as she sat there, that the Professor would likely understand it was very unlikely any of them would know anything about the rune drawn on the blackboard.
She fumbled for a while with her necklace. It was one her father had given her a long time ago, before she had started at Koalingo, she remembered him giving it to her and how it did not make sense that the necklace was in the shape of a Y rather then an E, which is what her name started with. She asked him about it, and he had told her that it was something to help keep her safe. She didn’t understand it then, and no matter how many times she thought about it, she was not about to understand it now either.
And then it hit her, like a ticking clock, she looked at the necklace she was fumbling in her hand and then at the rune drawn on the board, the two were identically shaped. And she had thought the other line in the bow of the Y was only there to attach the chain, she didn’t understand that it was supposed to be there and that it was in fact, a Rune.
“Professor?” she asked raising her hand with a little unease, she wasn’t sure if she dared attempt it, but thought it could not hurt her, and as he said, if she didn’t get it right, she was not exactly wrong either, just one step closer to the correct answer, “Does it have something to do with protection?”

“It’s not just about Protection,” Andreas said raising his hand after Elouise had spoken. As usual the students from the other houses were wrong again. Though while Elouise was not entirely wrong, she was also not entirely right, “It’s called Algiz, and it is the rune of protection, the magical properties infused with it give the user ultimate protection,” Andreas said as he sat forward in his seat feeling the need to show everyone it was him that answered correctly.
“The rune cal protect anything it is written on, or an area it is committed to at least,” he said with a look of fascination on his face. This was why he joined runes, they were so much more interesting and complex then wand magic.

Mariana pulled a face as she listened to the Ameraid talk. He appeared somewhat uppity and so sure about his own knowledge that he didn’t seem interested in the fact that maybe he sounded like a know-it-all with no such talent for being kind to others. Mariana didn’t like people like this boy. She knew she had seen him around quite a bit and had come to realise it was quite obvious why he did not have any friends.

Lucius sat forward in his seat trying not to look too eager, but the thought of a protective letter made him wonder exactly how one could perform such things. Security was a big issue for him at the moment and he was rather curious as to what he might be able to do with said magic if he was able to completely master it. How opportune this class finally became. He sat back and listened intently.
The Ameraid’s remarks intrigued him somewhat. It was not often one found an Ameraid to be of some use, but this Ameraid seemed to know a lot about this rune. Lucius considered the possibilities surrounding this as he listened to the Ameraid speak. His eyes drifted back to the Professor as he proceeded to listen and wait for his next set of instructions.

“Indeed Mister Mark is correct, the rune is precisely that, protection” Professor Emerindyl announced as he walked to his tablet and looked down at it. He looked back up at his students and instructed, |”Write this down, please,” he said as he struck his wand in the air and a ribbon issued from the end of it. He circled the floor space in front of the blackboard as he waited for his class to organise themselves.
Once they had he turned to them and smiled, “The rube is called Algiz,” he announced before continuing, “Algiz from the Anglo-Friesian or Germanic dialect, other translations are Elhaz, Algir, Algis, Algs, or Elgr but more or less we can safely understand the point of this rune is indeed, as Miss Snape and Mister Mark have pointed out; protection,” the ribbon in the air flew through the air and lopped into the words he spoke to make it easier for the slower hand writers to keep up with what he wanted them to do.
He moved towards the tablet he had lain down for himself and instructed for his class to do the same. “Runes, unlike spoken magic have a firmer hold on the supernatural forces in our world,”
“Now if I were to ask you all what you would do if someone attempted to curse you, I think I would be accurate in saying most of you would revert to a shield charm or actually be cursed,” this was not a question, more an observation on the habits of the young.
Professor Emerindyl moved off to the left and brought his wand flying upwards chanting “Avis!” A flock of canaries issued from the end of his wand coming to buzz around in a tight flock towards the end of the blackboard, “Miss Snape, I wonder if you could assist me by casting a shield charm upon this flock of canaries,”
It was a simple enough request; he didn’t consider for a moment that the student might not know how to cast a shield charm.

Barnak looked sideways at Elouise, back to the Professor and then again to Elouise, who seemed to be just sitting there, temporarily lost in thought.
He scowled. He was just starting school here, and one thing his father certainly hadn't taught him was shield charms: something he wanted to learn in a hurry.
He slipped his hand into his pocket, found his wand, aimed it at her shoulder and mumbled a nudging spell with such poor diction (for fear of being overheard) that he was lucky it still seemed to come out alright.
