Without knowing much about anything else, he had received his package by owl and taken the book directly to a fitting enough place to read it; the library. Normally he might be inclined to inhale the new-book smell. However, looking from the text to the two books beside him, he was not in the mood for nostalgia. Turning the final page of the only chapter he was immediately interested in, he found to his dismay that all that was left was about a paragraph and a half. A capped pen traced along the lines as his teeth began to grind behind clenched lips. He curled and uncurled his toes and the fingers of his left hand, right leg rapidly bobbing up and down.
He put aside the third book, irritated. Not a single one of them had more to say than he already knew on the subject. Resisting the urge to send the book flying, he turned his head away from 'Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.' If a schoolboy knew more about an animal than an author writing a book about animals, then someone wasn't doing their job. Niles gazed about the room, trying to quell his annoyance.
Maybe I should try writing someone... from back home. Or I could wait until everyone goes to sleep and try to make a firecall.
He wiped a blonde lock from his eyes and dug out a writing utensil and some paper. As Niles wrote, he thought carefully over each and every word. He had to try to sound a bit like his old self or his friend would be worried.
Zar,
I know I haven't written anyone in a few months. I moved away... far away. I don't think I want to say where just yet. I'm not sure I'm ready for everyone and their brother to know just how far I went when I started running. Mom's fine now, she's got a nice cozy job now and sometimes she takes the international floo back to see my uncle. He's just the same as last time we talked. When he talks its gibberish and most of the time he just stares at the wall. I mean, I never expected him to get better really. The doctors said they never do... but it isn't like I enjoy seeing him like that.
I'm not sure I'm coming back to the States. Maybe I can come to visit some time... I might ask my mother if I can come during break. How are things in your new home? On that same line, I was hoping you could ask Jeff to write me. I'm trying to learn everything I can about it. I may be gone but you still live near it and if it ever gets out of there, I want to be able to help. I was so useless last time it came at me that I probably could have gotten you killed.
I've done some research, but I can't find anything useful. I'm going to be writing the authors of a couple of books soon... but I don't think it will help.
You'd be surprised the kind of idiots that can get published.
Hope you're well

He put the paper away, feeling a bit hard done and very frustrated. Remembering either of the emerald-eyed wizards pulled at old wounds. Niles glanced around the library. He had yet to do much in the way of socializing. Socializing had been a liability toward the end of his last school year. Frankly he had cut down only to talking to Zar and the school's dueling referee. All of the Professors, save for maybe the deputy headmaster had become far too wrapped up to notice one student's failing grades or sudden descent into silence.
Or maybe they just thought he was going a bit loose in the head like a lot of the others. Being trapped in a castle with a monster guarding it could do that to a person.
I wonder if that's how fairytale princesses felt.
Perhaps in his distraction, he was not as aware of his surroundings as he ought to be....
