Smoke rings came slowly from behind a hedge in a back corner of one of the perfectly manicured gardens. The smoke was green and fragrant. The smoke blower was Jessica Everard, one of the Everard twins, a Ruberagon Sixth Year. She often snuck out here to smoke. To be honest, she didn't care for the cigarettes too much but it was a good excuse to be out of the common room, where she might run into her sister Natalie, or worse, Lucius Sinister and his band of pompous pricks. She detested them and everything they stood for. She knew she was exactly the kind of person that could fit in with them, good looking, pureblood and a bitch. But that just wasn't how she rolled, leave that kind of thing for her pathetic lesser twin. She wished they couldn't be associated with her, but it was a dead giveaway, what with the same surname and the fact that they were identical. Their own mother sometimes had trouble telling them apart, when she bothered to try.
Jessica inhaled again. It was getting chilly in the garden, night was approaching, so she pulled her leather jacket tighter around her as she squished the butt of her cigarette into the dirt by the root of the hedge she was nested in. She looked up at the sky and realised she could see the moon. It was definitely time to go inside. She stood up and brushed the dirt off her behind and climbed carefully out of the plant. As she turned around, she was startled to see someone there waiting for her. She had not heard the footsteps approaching..

“Well we both know what you were doing,” Romulus said while he leant carelessly against a sand stone statue of a centaur, one of many that decorated this area of the gardens. The detail of this and every other statue was exquisite, not one of them could be called similar, or the same to another, and Romulus often wondered if they’d once been real Centaurs, he’d heard there was a curse that turned said sub-humans to stone. He had his arms folded and his expression was unreadable as always. He still wasn’t entirely sure whether he agreed with what he was about to do, but his resolve was as iron, whether he liked it or not, it was required of him, and so it would be done.
“Walk with me,” he told her simply turning and walking away along the garden path in the direction of the grounds boundary, which was opposite to the way back inside the castle. As twilight set in Romulus could see the huddled figures of frightened groups herding towards the Great Staircase at the Entrance Courtyard. Few others were climbing the stair to the terrace above the pools which led straight into the Golden Hall. He could already smell the sweet scent of food on the air wafting from the kitchens below the Golden Hall. But it was not time for him to retire. His thoughts were not on food. They were on prey.
“Lucius and his pureblooded cronies continue to assert their authority over Ruberagon Fortress,” he muttered as he continued along the path, not even bothering to check whether Jessica was following him. He knew she would be, he had the girl hooked, it had not been difficult, he was something of a pro at it now. No girl was so difficult to tame when you looked and sounded like Romulus Silvia.
“It makes it difficult to speak openly,” he said as he came to the boundary wall that went around the castle, he drew out his wand and chanted a series of passwords inaudibly. The ground seemed to loose its consistency though Romulus remained where he stood, all around him the grass appeared as inconsistent as water.
He turned and looked to Jessica Everard and held out his hand, “Are you ready?”

“Ah well, you were just too late to share with me, that was my last one,” Jessica smiled as her eyes flickered up the length of him. There was no denying her infatuation with him, and lets face it, every girl loved a bad boy, a guy shrouded in mystery, a man who didn’t give a damn what anyone thought of him. And here was a specimen of such a man. A fine specimen at that, easy on the eyes.
”Walk with me,” he commanded, and she was too happy to oblige. She knew it was getting past the time of evening she felt comfortable outside at night, but what was the harm when there were two of them? She followed him down the garden path, their footsteps making barely any noise on the gravel as they headed away from the castle. Though it was getting late, she knew she would not be missed. She had no friends in Ruberagon, it was ruled by that elitist Lucius Sinister, and she knew they wouldn’t even notice she was gone. If her sister Natalie noticed, it would only make her happy Jessica was absent. The two of them did not see eye to eye. She knew all too well that Sinister had his spies everywhere, so she supposed that was why they always seemed to meet in dark hallways or open gardens. No conversation could be overheard here.
Jessica stopped a few steps behind Romulus as they reached the boundary wall, she was not sure of his intentions as he muttered something under his breath and the ground glimmered around him. She knew as he held out his hand to her that this would be like Alice chasing the white rabbit down the hole, but what did she have to lose? She had nowhere else to be and the thought of following him promised there would be adventure. She reached out and grasped his cool, firm hand and stepped towards him.

Romulus smiled when Jessica took his hand. Anyone who knew him knew well enough that this was not a positive gesture but something near to that of a tiger whose prey had just made that fatal mistake which made it dinner. He closed his cold fingers around her hand and the two stepped towards the shimmering earth before them. The last thing any onlooker would have seen were two figures turning and walking back inside via the nearest entrance. Stalking side by side in private conversation. But that was only an illusion and the truth was far from it.
To Jessica and Romulus however, the truth was a tunnel of complete darkness. There was a ringing in his ears as they moved through the portal he had laid in place year before. At the time his intentions were merely that of a boy who wanted to sneak out of the castle to cause midnight mischeif in the village below the school. Now though the portal had a whole different use.
He had been sequested by the Dark Lady to recruit, to provide for her bodies for her army of darkness. He had reached the point now where Jessica's addition was neccessary, and she would join the Guild of Avada, willing or not.
