Mariana shook almost violently as she crossed the school’s courtyard at an almost run. After that day she had decided that coming here, especially after hours, was a bad idea. She had only been down at the greenhouses offering to help Lady Saphricorn with the latest plantation of apple trees. Which despite the mundane sound of the act, was actually enjoyable, especially since Lady Saphricorn had manipulated their growth and the trees were already healthy saplings by the time she left. The courtyard itself was quiet and not very dark due to the great torches that feasted on flame atop the high walls surrounding her. She remembered they did not burn so fierce the night the Marks boy was murdered.
Despite their many attempts to jog her memory, Mariana knew that the Ministry thought she was hiding information from them. They told her they knew she was not doing it intentionally, and that if the person who placed the memory charm on her had done so with even the slightest fault, then she would remember something soon. This is why Arutha ConDoin was at the school every other weekend prowling about the entrance to Saphricorn Planes waiting for her. She had become accustomed to his schedule and had others warn her on the days that she should just stay put. She tapped her way across the stone paving with her book slung over her arm and her wand grasped firmly in her hand. Nothing had happened in months, but it still paid to be prepared, just in case.

'Hi there,' Jack greeted the Saphricorn warmly when he saw her come through the courtyard. He had been waiting for Marriana; wanting to check up on her. He had heard that the memory charm he'd placed on her had had some obvious side effects, which surprised him as he was usually very good with memory charms and normally left no side effects. The news that there were side effects could mean two things, one of which was that he had been very sloppy, and as he knew this was impossible, he knew the other must be that someone else had placed a memory charm on her, and if that was the case, what was it that they had forced her to forget. People did not just go around placing memory charms on people... at least not without a reason.
'You're Mariana, arent you? My name's Jack, I'm a first year in Emerindyl,' he said with the most positive and bubbly vibrance he could muster. He didnt want to scare her off, but knew that she was in the sixth year, so would probably find him a little irratating if not strange, but in no way a threat to her. Though then again, she did look a little jumpy.
'Do you mind if I walk with you... its just... you know, its not the safest place to be wandering around on your own anymore,'

"If you are here for stories, buzz off kid, because I dont feel like sharing," she answered gruffly, emboldened by the fact that this kid was quite obviously no older than a first year. She kept her back to him as she took a couple of steps further forwards when the boy mentioned how unsafe it was and not wanting to be on his own. She froze. She was about to run off on someone who just wanted her company for safety. When had she become a nasty person?
"Oh..." she turned to face him and felt immediately annoyed with herself. He was a cute kid, and he reminded her of someone else she knew. Standing there bold as brass in Emerindyl robes. But no... it could not be, she knew the boy she was thinking of was an only child. And yet the similarities between their physical features were rediculously obvious. But there was something else. Someone else familiar in this boys eyes. That must be it. He just had one of those faces. No way could their be an explanation for why he looked like two different people she knew, and neither of them were related.
"What are you going down here so late anyway kid?" she said to him, showing no real interest in his name. He was too young to befriend and she didnt want him to get any wrong ideas. She didnt want friends in the first year. That would be embarrassing.

"I just like to be out and about," he said without committing to any real answers. He was glad she had stopped. He had been watching her intently after that fateful night and was concerned that there was a problem with the enchantment he placed upon her. He knew using the term 'enchantment' wasnt exactly accurate; he had cursed her, and cursed her in a way that could have him arrested if anyone ever knew what he had done. He knew also that the guilt that was eating him up over it would endure for the rest of his life.
It had been Finnias after all, who had performed the Cruciatus curse on Mariana, but Jack had wiped her memory of most of that night, and that sort of memory alteration generally came with a bit of a backlash. Mariana would still even to this day be feeling the edges of the memory of that unforgivable curse. Even if the memory itself was no longer actually there. He grimaces at this thought. He would need to reprogram Mariana to whom she was before the attack. They couldnt allow her to continue being altered by this terrible attack. Even though she didnt remember it, she was not herself, and it was Jack's fault.
"Saphricorn tower is at the middle of the castle" he started by way of making conversation. "Why are you out here anyway?"
