Mariana sat on her own near the chcken pen. She was sitting on the ground with her legs crossed while she sat on the ground with a bag of seed on her lap. Every now and then she gathered up a handful fo the seed and cast it through the air across the floor of the chicked yard watching them scramble and flutter as they would have pecked each others eyes out to get to what precious seed was still not eaten by the time it hit the floor. Mariana thought this to be peculiar behaviour. Certainly not that it was odd, chickens were notorious for behaving this way, but it didnt really say much about them as a species. No bonds of sisterhood at all.
Contemplating that thought she decided chickens were not all that different from human beings. True if she was hungry and someone offered her and one hundred others only a handful of seed she would probably push over her sisters to get to it. She could certainly think of a few girls in particular that she wouldnt mind pushing over even if she wasn't doing it to get to food. She smirked at that, though the smile faded shortly after as she realised just how unjust that thought was. She sank into a dismal melancholy as she considered her actions of the last couple of weeks.
It was obvious why she didnt have any female friends. Boys were just so much easier to understand and get along with. They didnt sneak around behind your back the way other girls do and they certainly understand when to keep their nose out of things. She smiled thinking of Tye. She had sprung him trying to talk about her the other day. Since then she was happy to see whenever she came near him he shut his mouth and never brought the topic to that of Jay Rastan.
It was then that she heard the indignant calls of the ducks. She turned to see them wagging their tails and looking into the chicken yard appraising the short rations she had been handing out. They looked at her expectatntly and she smiled back tossing them a handful. Well naturally the chickens were outraged, this was their feed after all. The ducks however fell over themselves trying to get at the food in a way that looked a lot more awkward then the attack of the chicken. A couple of necks got trodden on and a lot of quacking cause Mariana to laugh a rich throaty laughter that she rarely displayed in public.
"Oh hush now" she chided the chickens, throwing them another handful and leaning back against the wooden fence post as she sighed contentedly.

"That wouldnt be the first time comebody told me to shut up, but I reckon it would be the first time someone said it when I wasn't even talking," Virginia said as she smiled down at the squatting figure of Mariana. "Ana is it? Can I call you Ana?" she asked before continuing, "The names Virginia, you probably seen me around a bit" she didnt know that that was entirely true, she knew a little about this girl from a distance, but not enough to tell anyone that she knew her.
"You seem lost in a daze girl, whats on your mind?" she said reaching into her pocket and tossing an ANZAC biscuit on the ground. The chickedns scrambled for it and she watched with a smile on her face. She had chickens on her farm back home and she knew how much they liked ANZAC cookies. They'd tear at that cookie until every morsel was devoured. And she liked watching them do it.
"A penny for your thoughts?" she added. The girl didnt look too happy. Virginia knew a little about the way of girls, having been a guys girl for most of her life. Her friends from when she was young were mostly female, but she found as she got older that boys were just easier to get along with and other girls just confused her. Maybe she could get through to this sixth year, and maybe they could become friends from it. Either way it was something to do, and Virginia didnt like to see people looking down in the dumps.
"You know what I think" she started up, an attempt at conversation that might be lost on someone who didnt want to bother, "I dont think ducks are very clever animals, I mean sure they're cute, they look good, certainly a lot more attractive then the common chicken, but I dont think there is really much substance to them - do you?" she thought taking a sideways glance at Mariana, "Kind of like boys, you might say?"
She climbed up over the fence and came to rest down next to Mariana, producing two more cookies, she bit into one of them greedily before offering the other to Mariana, "You know its true,"

"That wouldn’t be the first time somebody told me to shut up, but I reckon it would be the first time someone said it when I wasn't even talking," Virginia said as she smiling down at Mariana who was more then a little surprised by the sudden company. Enough so that she gasped with shock and dropped the small bag of chicken seed. The chickens rushed her, though quickly whipping out her wand every seed was back in the little bag and the bag was secured; tied in her hand.
"Ana is it? Can I call you Ana?" The girl asked causing Mariana to wince before she realised the girl had already moved on and was now introducing herself. “Hi,” she fumled feeling stupid. Well one thing was for certain, though she didn’t exactly know this girl, Virginia was full of energy, wasn’t that what being in Saphricorn was all about? Mariana sometimes wondered.
“I am in a bit of a daze actually,” she admitted humbly remaining where she sat looking up at the girls bright face. She suddenly felt a little silly sitting on the ground. Or that was that she only felt stupid until the girl jumped the fence and joined her. Mariana remembered now why she liked it so much in the Saphricorn house. Everyone was so down to earth… well most everyone.
“My thoughts aren’t even worth a penny,” Mariana said, knowing it sounded a little depressing. She took the ANZAC biscuit from the girl knowing that she should probably be a little insulted. After all; the girl had just given the very same kind of biscuit to the chickens. Was she supposed to realise this meant Virginia found her to be worth no more then common poultry. She bit her tongue to punish herself for that thought. What was she doing? The very same thing other girls did that she didn’t like; looking into things and coming back with a result ten times different the meaning of the action. She sighed.
Mariana laughed when Virginia commented on the ducks being stupid. She thought about it for a little while and watched them. It was true, ducks did look a lot better then chickens, but then they did trip over themselves a lot. Maybe they were the inferior species. She smiled thinking of how the ducks reminded her of Jay Rastan.
It was then that Virginia decided to mention that ducks and boys had a lot in common. Mariana laughed again surprise that this girl seemed to know exactly what she had been thinking.
“I think you might have something there,” she smiled back at her new friend and wiping the thoughts of certain male’s from her mind, “It’s nice to meet you Virginia, may I call you Ginny?”

“I think you might have something there,” Mariana had said to her, smiling this time. Virginia smiled back, she could see that she was breaking through, Mariana then said “It’s nice to meet you Virginia, may I call you Ginny?”
Virginia winced in response to that, suddenly realising exactly what was meant behind it, "Point made my dear Mariana," she smiled at the other girl warmly, producing a third biscuit and biting into it; savouring the flavour as she had done so many times before throughout her life. She was not prepared to let anyone start calling her Ginnt, and she understood immediately that Mariana was not about to let anyone start calling her Ana. She smiled, this girl had a bit of bite in her, which was always good, Virginia liked a girl who could hold her own.
"Well its probably a good thing they arent worth a penny, because I havent one on me. Not surprising though seeing the circulation of penny's ended in the 1960's" she smiled at her own joke, "I do have plenty of ANZAC cookies though, which is good because I reckon I am right in guessing that your have plenty of thoughts to sell for them... only if you're interested of course, I know when I am being pushy, and maybe I am being a little pushy now, but dont think I am above reprieve, tell me its none of my business if you want," she knew she was meandering. But she also knew there was no way to come right out and say that she'd overheard the other seventh year girls talking about Mariana in the Seventh Year girls dorm house.
Virginia had been coming back inside after spending the afternoon working with the horses in the stables when she had heard the other girls talking about Jay Rastan. Virginia tried not to get involved in such discussions as she had a completely putonic interest in the boy in her year. He seemed fun enough at times, but he was certainly not her tastes... at least not in the way the other seventh year girls talked about him. Anyway, the snippet of conversation she had heard was not particularly flattering for Mariana Torrenne and Virginia thought she might have to look in on the girl; if for no other reason then so that she understood who the other girls were talking about.
"Well of course I am right," she flashed a grin at Mariana, knowing that Mariana was probably leading more in the direction of boys being as dumb as ducks, though Virginia never played the sage and thought she could endear herself to her new younger friend by playing the fool just a little bit. She'd noticed that people seemed more likely to open up to someone they thought did not share their level of intelligence just to keep from embarrassing themselves by opening up. "Look at their long necks and those flappy feet, they can barely stay upright," she smirked.
