I know I shouldnt need to give this lecture to any of you, but here it is anyway;
The following is a basic tutorial of how to roleplay for those whom havent quite got the hang of it yet.
Lesson One:Third Person
You cannot place in first person, you must roleplay in third person. To write a post and make it worth others taking time ot read it, you must write it as a if writing a story.
WRONG: I walked into the entrance foyer of the Brightstar Manor, I could see Lord Brightstar shouting at some servant, I just hoped he did not turn on me next.
RIGHT: Elizabeth walked into the entrance foyer of Brightstar Manor, she could see Lord Brightstar shouting at some servant, she hoped he would not turn on her next.
First person not only looks tacky but makes it difficult for a reader to follow the storyline. It also annoys other rolpelayers, break this rule and accept social humiliation.
Lesson Two:Speech
When writing a post in a thread where your character is talking to someone always use "speechmarks"
example: "Good morning Professor, what will we be learning today" doing this will not only help people understand you more, but it allows you to get into the feel of what kinds of things your character would say,
Lesson Three:Spelling and Punctuation
Spelling I am not overtly fussed on, typo's are a huge mistake and I make them quite often so i will not discriminate, but the use of CAPS and punctuation . , : ; ' " ! ` ( ) - is very important. It can aggrivate others if you do not use correct punctuation and use of caps
Lesson Four:Actions
Its all very well to speak to someone in a post, but you are not automatically wherever they are, when entering and leaving a thread, make sure you post it.
example: John entered the Golden Hall and sat down beside Jane,
Lesson Five:Feelings
To make your roleplaying realistic you should have passion in your posts. Smiling, crying, whether your character is bored or busy, or tired etc...
example: John walked into his dormitory and crashed on his bed positively buggered from the days activities, he rolled over, yawned, and drifted off to sleep
Lesson Six:Detail
The better posts always have detail, not everyone can do this at current, but its always good if you can try.
example: John awoke to find himself in his four poster, the dormitory a little stuffy from the five others in the room breathing so heavily all night without the window open. He climbed out of his bed, he was still wearing his quidditch robes from the day before, the game having been so exhausting he fell asleep immediately afterwards.
Lesson Seven:Length
Lengthy posts are always good and tend to find themselves getting more replies. By using all of the above tips you have been given the ingrediants make these lengthy posts, try them and see.
Lesson Eight:Ettiquette
Be polite on the boards, simply enough - if a group of people are playing a thread and it clearly does not need someone new in it, then keep out, yes the point of roleplaying is something out of expectations happening, but if a thread has two or more pages on it, it is clearly set in motion and doesnt need new RPers to get involved, unless your invited by someone already in the thread.
Also - check the dates of the last time a thread has been posted in, before you post there, clearly if the thread has not had a reply in more then a week, then the thread is dead, start a new one or join in a more recent one.
Lesson Nine:In Character and Out of Character
Do NOT post out of character in an in character thread, unless of course you indicate this with brackets ((out of character remark)) only this way will out of character posts be tolerated. If out of character posts are made on in character thread, the posts will be deleted. ALSO do not post out of character replying to something in character:
Example If you are roleplaying in character with someone and they make a bad remark about your character, or they treat your character in a way you do not like DO NOT reply to this in a threat out of character, anyone caught doing this will be expelled from the site indefinately, this is an offense and will not be tolerated.
Actions like this *yawns* *smiles* *laughs* are OUT OF CHARACTER actions, do not use them as in character actions.
When thinking thoughts, this is best done in Italics Like this
Well there you have it, a basic outline, the rest is up to you, but good roleplayers are what makes the site work. ONE LINE POSTS ARE STRICLTY PROHIBITED do not make one-liners, show some enthusiasm for posts, ok?
The rest is up to you...
