Post by Professor Lucy Cusack on Feb 15, 2007 17:45:01 GMT 10
Thoroughly excited by being a teacher, Lucy Cusack had arrived at her new classroom an hour early to set up. There wasn't really anything she needed to set up, as everything was already there for her, but she remembered back when she was at school, divination hadn't been terribly fun. She had aced it of course, but that was due to her particular talents.
The first thing she did was pull the heavy blinds down and open the windows. She knew that Professor Ngera hadn't had the room this stuffy and dark when she was at school, but she wasn't sure if Ngera had been the last professor to teach in this classroom.
With a gentle breeze coming through into the class room, she set about beating the dust out of the fat floor cushions the students sat on. Once that was done, she rearranged the classroom to her particular tastes and sat on one of the cushions to review her lesson plan. She had decided to start with natural seers today, as a fun first lesson, and would be using herself as an example. But before that, Lucy wanted to brush up on other examples and so was still skimming the chapter in her copy of the text book when the students began to arrive.

Lakasha entered the classroom with a degree of uncertainty, she had been forced to take this elective because some of the other Professor’s would not have her in their classes and so she was punished by being forced to take a class she knew no respectable wizard would find interesting.
She sauntered into the classroom without looking at the Professor, if she had she might not be so surprised when a moment ago, after sitting and looking around lazily, her eyes fell on the Professor… or was she? She seemed awfully young, perhaps a teachers aid? Or a seventh year that had been knocked back a couple time for graduation. If that was the case, Lakasha was not surprised she didn’t know the girl. If she’d been forced to repeat a year, she’d be too embarrassed to show her face either.
She pulled a magazine out of her bag and began to peruse it while she waited for the other students to arrive, the whole while remaining silent.

Post by Godric Emerindyl on Feb 16, 2007 5:39:53 GMT 10
Godric walked into the classroom with has bag propped over his left shoulder, he had been doing Divination Studies ever since the third grade, and it was, in his third grade, that Professor Ngera resigned and moved onto bigger and better things. Unfortunately this meant for Godric, who had retained the subject in his fourth fifth and sixth year, he would experience three new teachers at the post, none of them lasting longer then one year.
Perhaps this was why Godric was dubious about returning to the subject. He didn’t actually have any natural abilities for Divination though he always managed to scrape through with fair marks. He certainly understood the theory. It was more achieving the practical side of things. He never actually saw anything in his crustal balls but mist. Though he could read tealeaves quite well; fortunately for him, tealeaves didn’t require foresight.
Nevertheless he entered the classroom after having extensive discussions with his father over having to return to the subject, he had hoped they would not be able to find a suitable teacher for it this year so that he could drop it by default and pick up something else. Seeing as his father found someone though, this meant Godric would have to continue with it.
Once he found a suitable cushion to sit upon; Godric lounged back in it noticing at once that the windows were completely open. This surprised him as the previous professor had the dim-witted belief that opening the windows let a persons aura escape which was why half the class could never be in the beyond. He chuckled remembering this, and started flipping through one of his books while he waited.

Holly stepped into the Divination classroom and was pleasantly surprised by the new fresh smell and bright lighting. This classroom had been shrouded in darkness the last few years after Professor Ngera left and Holly found she quite liked the new change. The cushions had all been rearranged and... was it really.. clean??
Mentally stopping herself from skipping, Holly finally let her attention fall to the few people that were already there. A Ruberagon and a fellow Emerindyl and was that a new student? She certainly looked young enough to be one, but she wasn't wearing the school robes. Holly could only assume that this was their new teacher.
Adjusting her book bag, she decided to sit near Godric Emerindyl. Though she didn't usually have a lot to do with him, she quite often sat near him at breakfast and knew him to be quite a nice guy. She smiled at him and sat down.

Barnak knew that Divination was probably a waste of time, but he had a spare period and was more than unusually bored, and from what little he had heard from his father's time at school it promised him at least a bit of amusement.
As he entered the classroom with absolutely no idea what to expect, he once again found himself surrounded by older students. With a quick acknowledging nod to the only other Ruberagon present he found a cushion, sat down and hugged it in his lap, eyes sliding shut and mind drifting while he waited for the class to start.

Lucius walked into the classroom with a dismal look on his face, ‘I cannot believe this joke of a class is still running,’ and he was quite within his rights to dislike it. Years ago, when he was in his third year, Lucius had attended divination for the first time out of curiosity because he thought it would be terribly useful to be able to understand what might happen next, how very wrong he was, since then he had given several teachers seizures when they touched him and he was beginning to think that perhaps they saw something he would really like to know about, but never would as whenever these teachers recovered, they had forgotten the previous week.
It was maddening to know that there was knowledge there that concerned him and yet it was always and always would remain just out of his reach. He didn’t know why he had returned to Divination this year, but he had to find out what the seers were seeing, what they knew about his future that seemed so ghastly their minds would rather shut down then see or mention it to anyone again. He didn’t know what it was, but for the life of him, he would find out.
He saw Lakasha when he entered the classroom, and the small boy he had seen in Ancient Runes, but apart from that there appeared to be no other Ruberagons in the class, well at least, if he were to have to suffer the subject, he would not have to do so alone. And so choosing the correct group to apply himself to, he sat at the same table as Lakasha Shocanis.

Elouise walked into Divination looking around for some friends to sit with; at once she zoned in on Godric and Holly and in a moment was sharing a table with them. She didn’t know exactly how she felt about Divination. Her father had told her many times that it could be quite useful, but he also said for someone to actually be able to utilise it, one also had to have certain gifts, and Elouise was also quite sure she did not have them.
“New teacher?” she said inching a little closer to Holly so that no one could hear them. She had not seen this teacher around before, this would be interesting.

((For those of you that didn't get to play their arriving, please just play as though you are already in the class. Thankyou!))
Lucy had looked up as each student arrived. It had only taken roughly 10 minutes to fill the classroom and so once every cushion was taken, she shut her book and stood to face the class.
There was no blackboard on the wall of this classroom. It was set out quite differently, almost like a mini auditorium with large steps that held the cushions. At the front was the Professors desk and behind that, the windows that were now open. There were a few books and a crystal ball on the desk. The crystal ball was there for show really, as Lucy didn't use it. However, those of the students that were less gifted could possibly use it.
Lucy stood and leaned against the front of her desk, facing the students, and tucked the textbook under her arm.
"So, welcome! My name is Professor Cusack, and I will be your Divination teacher for this year" It was rather formal, but she spoke in a cheery voice,
"A lot of people think Divination is a load of rubbish," she started by way of introduction to the first class, "But of course, those are the people that have absolutely no natural talent. Divination can be learned to an extent, if you have patience and time, but it's not really a substitute for natual talent. Good thing that there are very few people out there who have zero talent. Most people have a little bit, even Muggles, as can be seen in the common phenomenon of Deja Vu."
Placing the text book on her desk she looked around the classroom at the students, grinning "Today, I thought we would have a bit of fun exploring natural talent. Can anyone tell me the differences between a Seer, an Empath, a Medium and an Ameraid?"

Barnak fought to hold back an immediate snicker, various definitions of an Ameraid whizzing through his head. He found himself reluctantly raising a hand and responding to the Professor's opening question. He had not often been around muggles in his life but he was familiar enough with those strange things they called visions - tel-e-visions if he remembered correctly - to be able to interpret the words.
"A seer is literally able to see things that others do not, often simply because they are blinded by disbelief. An empath's heart mirrors the feelings of others, frequently involuntarily, which can cause no end of interesting psychological problems for the empath. A medium is someone who is open to..."
Barnak fought for a word that he felt comfortable with.
"Suggestion. To being used, as a method of interaction with other people. Like... an owl."
He brightened visibly. 'Hey, maybe this class isn't totally bogus after all,' he thought. 'Maybe I will be able to hot-air my way through it to get some good marks.' He glanced around to where the other Ruberagons were seated, saw the looks on their faces and sank lower into his... cushion. 'Or perhaps I will just finish trying to earn us some house points and then shut my mouth.'
"And an Ameraid..." Barnak stopped, truly uncertain as to how to continue. Oh he knew what he wanted to say, but he didn't want to lose house points for saying it. His upper lip curled slightly. He hoped their horribly young Professor wasn't empathic herself, lest she pick up on the waves of irritation he felt at just speaking the name Ameraid. "An Ameraid is clearly... in a class of its own."

Post by Allora Thunder on Mar 1, 2007 6:35:47 GMT 10
Allora listened to the words of the Ruberagon, not entirely pleased that he had managed to answer before she did. This surprised her a lot though, as she found this to be an overly eager reaction for a Ruberagon, and she could not help but find herself to be slightly amused. This was definitely a first, ’Perhaps there is hope for the House of Ruberagon after all,’ she thought to herself as her transparent eyes watched the Ruberagon.
She listened to the Ruberagon’s answer, it interested her as to where he got his answers from, as Allora agreed with only one of his definitions of the various titles given to people wth individual ‘talents’ in the way of psychologically related magic… if that was the best title for it.
She did however fight back the need to correct the Ruberagon… for a little anyway, she wanted to hear all of his answers before she thought to give an answer on what she knew to be correct, though perhaps they both were.
“Please Professor,” she said raising her ghostly hand when the Ruberagon had finished talking. She was interested in exactly what he meant about Ameraid’s being in a class of their own. On occasion this could have appeared to be a compliment, though Allora understood he would most certainly not have meant it that way.
“A seer can see things others do not, though this is usually tied to the fact that they cannot see visibly with their eyes and so they notice things about people and places that other who can see, are literally blinded by the solid truth of the moment, in cases this allows them to see the future for a certain thing or person and they can use this information to help or torment people, sometimes giving a seer the ability to actually see with their eyes takes such powers away, a self-made seer is usually so as they tie clothe about their eyes and never ever remove it, natural seers are generally so because they are blind,” Allora said much happier with this answer then the one the Ruberagon gave.
“I agree with – ” she inclined her ghostly head at Barnak, “with his definition of an empath, however,”
“A medium, on the other hand, some people say that a medium can interact with spirits, sometimes for knowledge, sometimes as a link between the living and the dead,” she realised what puns could become of this being that she was a ghost, but pressed on all the same, “Using their connections with the spirit world, they can sometimes see things that have happened in the past, and give such recollections to those who are living, which can come in useful, but have their downsides, a lot of mediums in the muggle world are believed to be liars, though occasionally a successful medium can solve mysteries that have been so for an age,”
She cast a look at the Ruberagon before she considered the definition of an Ameraid, she still did not understand exactly what he meant, and so would pass judgement on him for now, but knew it could not have sounded nearly as complimentary as it did, “An Ameraid. I am assuming you mean in relation to our telepathic abilities?” she mentioned as she thought it might be an interesting way to find out the Ruberagon’s deal, “An Ameraid develops natural telepathic abilities, something brought on by being a house member, one does not need to have any kind of family history surrounding telepathic abilities to gain them, they simply occur,” she said looking straight at the teacher, “It is believed to have something to do with increased capabilities of the brain and little to actually do with magic, though the process of which increases the brains capability is indeed magically performed, though only one person know how it actually occurs and that person is our house founder, telepathy, is not legilimency, and so cannot be blocked out by occlumency at all,”

Lucy smiled as Barnak gave his definitions of her words. Though they were not all correct, she was nonetheless impressed with the first years attempt. She leant back on her desk and nodded thoughtfully as he spoke. She then turned to Allora as soon as he had finished and waited for her to speak. These definitions were similar and she was glad that at least a few in the class had managed to gather that they were not all the same thing.
“Hmm, both of you have given me good answers, but I’ll clear it up. A seer is able to see things others are not, of course you are right there. Sometimes a seer is blind to the present world, but there are many of those out there who are gifted with foresight and normal sight. Blindness in a Seer is not as common as you would think. In fact, often a Seer becomes one because they cannot see the natural world in the first place and so adapt. The skills of such people usually include premonitions and are easy targets for possession.
“And empathy feels what those around them feel. They are not telepathic, and they cannot read thoughts as such, though any Ameraid will tell you it’s not as simple as reading a book. Muggle empaths are often found working as social workers and coucellors. Here, we tend to use them more in the Ministry.
“A medium however, was correctly defined by Miss Thunder,” she continued, not bothering to explain how she knew Allora’s name, “a Medium communicates with those that have passed on from our world. And you were right about Muggle Seers Allora, they are often ridiculed by others because Muggles are usually quite afraid of what they do not understand. Hence our lives being kept secret and separate from theirs.
“And yes, Ameraids are telepaths because they are Ameriads, not Ameraids because they are telepaths, if that makes sense.
Lucy picked up a glass of water off her desk and took a sip before continuing on.
“Now, here’s the fun part. Who can tell me what they think I am? A Seer, an Empath, a Medium or an Ameraid?” she grinned and looked around at the students.

Barnak almost snorted at the question. Fun? He looked at their young teacher and counted them off... slightly perky with an annoyingly friendly smile, teaching a useless subject, being a teacher in the first place... The word Ameraid just popped into his head as it always did when someone said something he found stupid.

Andreas smirked inwardly when he heard the answer of the Ruberagon, he did not agree with his answer either and was not at all surprised to see the Professor correct them. He was more pleased with Allora’s answer and found that between the two, she seemed closer to the mark. This made him want to laugh, Oh the stupidity of others
He sometimes wondered why some felt the need to speak, especially when all they managed to do was sound stupid and demonstrate to the world how ignorant they are.

Holly was enjoying this class already. She had always enjoyed divination, and had sometimes been jealous of the natural skills the Ameraids had. She tried hard in this class, but didn't really think she had any abilities. The idea of knowing what was going to happen in the future was very appealing, yet still remained mysterious.
She thought about the question posed to the class. It was an interesting one, and the Professor had to be talented to be teaching this subject. Her first guess was an Ameraid, after all, who better to teach such a class? But was she only one of them?
"Professor, if you please, I'd say you were an Ameraid if you attended Koalingo." she said, as she put her hand in the air. The teacher had said Seers were not often blind, and Holly took this to be some sort of hint.
"I would even go so far as to say you're also a Seer, Professor." she was embarassed. It wasn't often the put her hand up to contribute to class discussions, but the subject was fascinating her, and the idea that the teacher might be incredibly talented made her brain tick.

Belle looked from the teacher to the class, from the class and back to the teacher as she listened to everyone speak. It was all very intriguing but she was kidding herself to think she understood any of it and so she remained in her seat with her hands clasped neatly together on her lap and simply enjoyed the comfort of the bean bags.
She did wonder, though, when they would start doing something. She had found interest in Divination. Telling the future seemed like a good money making possibility once leaving school. You see Belle was muggle born, and she knew there would be money to make on sharing her abilities with the world.
She knew she would have to be subtle with it, of course. The ministry would never allow her to use her abilities in public. But if it became a syndicated television show… how could they stop her… really?
