Audrey stood in the entrance to the Golden Hall and watched the man she knew to be her son. It still puzzled her, but Audrey had never been one to questions the judgement or actions of Lord Emerindyl, her husband’s grandfather. For whatever reason, he had brought back her husband Jack, his father Godric, herself, and her own son Tobias to Koalingo, all at the age of 23. Whatever magic it was, Audrey found it extraordinarily peculiar.
She continued to gaze at Tobias. Her constantly amazed her, for at her age, he should have been a mere boy of four, and instead he was all grown up. She supposed it was strange for him too, considering that the last memory of her that Tobias had had, she would have been quite middle-aged.
Clenching her teeth, Audrey felt a shiver run down her spine. It was certainly cold in this doorway, but she did not wish to alert Tobias to her presence. She pulled her jacket closer to her before she realised that the prickling at the back of her neck was not the cold, but indeed someone standing behind her. Her eyes never wavered from the watch over her son, but her hands slid behind her back and she smiled as familiar hands slipped into hers.
“You’re late...” She spoke quietly, gently touching the familiar bracelet around the wrist of the man behind her.

Jack Emerindyl caressed Audrey’s wrist with his free hand before bringing both hands around to link in front of her before kissing her softly on the side of her neck. Probably not the kind of attention this Hall was used to, but he did it all the same without hesitation. In this world, his wife was his only grasp on reality, she was dearest of all to him, and having her here with him made him feel that much better.
“What spy you, my love?” he whispered in her ear as he came to rest his chin on her shoulder, rubbing the side of his youthful face against hers. His eyes strayed to those present in the Hall, he could see his fully grown son away a little on the Emerindyl table and once again, as he did every time, he fell into a silent reverie.
He breathed slowly as he rested on his wife’s shoulder, he was still adapting to his son being as old as he was, it was a strange feeling, though he guessed this was a good sign, the perils in Jack’s life to come would not harm his son any, by the looks of it.
“He looks like you, you know,” Jack started after several lengthy moments of nothing, “Look at his face, its you all over, though maybe we can contribute that nose to me…” he smirked.
“Why don’t you go and talk to him?” Jack suggested though he had not been brave enough to do it before this point, and even now he was only suggesting that his wife do it, him merely tagging along for moral support.

Audrey leaned back into her husbands’ arms, feeling secure in his hold as always. Only he could make her feel this way and she smiled as she felt his lips upon her neck. His breath on her skin and his soft words in her ear always drove her crazy with desire, and he knew all the tricks to make her knees go weak.
“Did you not see his face when he saw us, Jack? He was horrified...” She closed her eyes for a moment, picturing the aghast look on her son’s face when he realised the couple standing before him were his parents, two decades younger than they should have been.
As her bright eyes flicked open again, they moved back to Tobias and she let out a small, barely audible sigh. It wasn’t like Audrey to complain, but she did worry about the effect this all would have on her son’s mental health. She worried too about her husband, having to share the age of both his son and his father.
Her hand clasped around Jack’s and she pulled away and stepped into the Golden Hall, taking her husband with her. As they approached the table, she smiled, waiting for Tobias to look up and see them.

Tobias tried not too look up but he knew they had crossed the room, he could smell that familiar scent he had always associated with his mother. He knew he should not worry so much about this. His parents had never really been around while he grew up anyway, something about it not being safe for him to be with them wherever it was they went on a constant basis.
The stories his father used to write in his journal that Tobias would steal once a year to study on who his father was. He knew there was a great weight on his father’s shoulders and that his mother had shared that weight, and so it was no surprise the two of them had very little to do with his bringing up. He only ever saw them in the summer holidays, and even then it was brief glimpses of a family Tobias always wanted.
He looked up at them trying not to look too shaken by this experience, had it happened yet? Did his parents even know why they were borderline strangers to him? He didn’t imagine so seeing he was so young in their reality, though he knew all the same, that if they hadn’t done it yet, they would after this time, and that made him dislike them more. But then he wasn’t sure if they even knew now that he disliked them.
Knowing this, he thought this should not be the time to let them know how he felt about them, they were both young and seemed as curious of him as he did of them before he came to decide his estrangement to his parents would never change.
“Hi,” he grimaced at them when they were standing within reach and not saying anything, well this was awkward, “Would you like to sit down?” he offered looked at the paramount of seating space around him, there were a few other people in the hall, and he did not really feel like drawing attention.

Audrey resisted the urge to hug her son. Instead, she sat down opposite him, pulling her husband into the chair next to her. She had not been this close before, and she took a long hard look at the young man before her, from his nose, the same as his fathers, to the rest of his features, all very similar to her own. Yes, Tobias was most definitely an Emerindyl, she could see it written all over him. But at the same stroke, he was definitely a Browne and she was proud of that fact. He seemed to have grown up well, and she had been delighted when he offered her a seat. Her son had manners, and for that she was happy.
She realised now that she was quite literally staring at Tobias and she looked down as a pink flush came to her cheeks. She wondered what he thought of her, suddenly worried about the impact she had had on her son’s life. Perhaps that was the reason her son had looked so horrified to see her.
“How are you?” she asked tentatively. She wasn’t sure why she was being so careful, for in her time, her son absolutely adored her and she spoilt him rotten. What had changed? There was a look about his face, one of something unforgiven. There were so many questions she wanted to ask, but she thought perhaps a casual one qould break the ice.

“Hi…” he replied finding this a most curious way to start a conversation with his parents, in the last seventeen years they had not asked it of him, and to get it now seemed almost wrong, “Ah…. Um I mean, sorry, I’m fine thank you,” he answered not clicking that he should ask them how they were, and he did not for a moment; plan on elaborating.
The next moment of silence was so uncomfortable Tobias thought of getting up and leaving more then once. Thank goodness his training in occlumency had allowed him to hide these thoughts should his mother choose to use legilimency on him to figure out what he was thinking, or why things were the way they were between them. He knew this mother in front of him had not betrayed her son as yet, and so she was not guilty, but he could not help but judge her for a crime she was still going to commit.
He looked away from them as well, knowing this would hint too clearly that he did not like them, but it was hard to try and hide just how repugnant, having them in his presence was to him.
“Is there anything I can help you with?” he asked at last, his tone as icy as it could be without being outright rude. He had every intention on walking off on them now, though he would remain in his seat long enough to hear then fall over themselves in confusion, if that was the way things were to play out.

Audrey was taken aback by the abruptness of the man she knew to be her son. She wondered briefly if they had made a mistake coming to talk to him, but she pushed that thought well to the back of her mind.
Speaking of minds, why was Tobias’ mind so guarded? She had not meant to use legilimency, but she was curious. All she found was a wall so hard and thick it sent her spinning back into her own head. She felt suddenly dizzy and quite ill, and knew she would not be trying that again.
Her son was obviously very angry with her, which she could tell just from his facial expression and tone of voice. Audrey pushed a curl away from her face and avoided looking as Tobias. She felt almost as though he’d slapped her. She took a sidelong glance at Jack and gave his hand a squeeze.
“Tobias,” she started, and then stopped, not knowing where to even begin. So many questions she wanted to ask, none of which she even knew how to put into words.
“Are we... Are you...” she sighed and looked straight at the son she didn’t know.
“What did we do?” she finally asked, quietly.

Tobias looked back at his mother with a curious expression forming on his lips; his eyes betrayed an upset look for the briefest of moments though he was sure his mother had caught it. She had always been good with things like that, and he had learned well to hide these emotions from her. He didn’t know quite how to answer this question, why would his mother care. She always seemed to be vaguely interested, but not to the point of really caring, in his real time. He looked at his father for a fleeting moment. He too seemed unaware of the grudge he held for the two of them.
“Nothing, mother,” he answered though he did not move to touch her or hug her as his thoughts told him he should. More then anything else he wanted to draw away from them like darkness from a flickering candle.
He had felt her fleeting attempt to draw information by force and repelled her expertly; he was a little hardened by this attempt. As he thought on it though it became vastly obvious to him that he had expected her to d0o it all along. This did not bode well though as it meant she was just as he remembered her. Slightly less hardened, but not afraid of invading her sons privacy.
“Are we done?” he asked her rather bluntly. He had enough of this first meeting and was sitting on the very edge of his chair, he wanted to get up and leave though he was also compelled to stay where he was. He felt a familiar nagging in the back of his mind and understood at once that his Great Grandfather was watching from somewhere. Ever present in Tobias’ mind. He knew his Great Grandfather would be summoning him for a swift telling off after this meeting, as always he did when Tobias argued with his parents. He didn’t care though, this would be worth it. His whole life his parents were withdrawn from him for reasons they never cared to share with him. He knew they kept secrets from him and forced him out of their lives. So why should he give them the opportunity to sneak back in just because it suited them now.

Are we done? Those words felt like a slap across Audrey's face and she resisted the urge to tell her son off. After all, she didn't really even know this man. Though he said they had done nothing, it was quite obvious that they had hurt him very deeply in some way.
She clasped her hands together on the table and sighed, looking to her husband sadly. She turned back to Tobias and nodded softly. Yes, they were done for now. Perhaps quiet persistance might win him over eventually and he would possibly open up to her. Though she couldn't see how that would happen, for he was obviously as stubborn as she was, she still hoped he might see things her way.
"Yes Tobias, we're done." Audrey closed her eyes for a moment, then stood up and pushed her chair in. Should Jack follow her, or stay with their son, well, that was his choice, but she no longer felt it was useful for her to be sitting at that table.

That was all Tobias needed to hear. They were done, more then his parents probably realised. He knew his grandfather would not appreciate his attitude towards his parents; he never did, though Tobias was adult enough to make his own choices now, and he would not readily forgive his parents regardless of whether they knew why. He inched towards the edge of his seat and stood up looking away from both parents almost immediately. It seemed his mother had no care to persist. Be that the case neither did he. He should not be surprised though, the two rarely saw eye to eye in what they thought required the attention of both of them.
He cast a gaze distantly to the sun shining beyond the glass doors, which led off to the terrace outside the Golden Hall. He moved away from the table without casting a backwards gaze to either of his parents.
