'That blasted bird is at it again!'
That was the first thought that had entered and processed through Jay Rastan's sleep hazed mind for the past twenty-four days straight. He wasn't sure how much longer he could take it before he answered the age old question of; do all birds taste like chicken?
He couldn't help but chuckle into the mattress of his ultimately comfortable bed since he had his pillow clenched over his head trying to drown out the sound of the bird in question squawking. He could just imagine all the repercussions and the looks on the faces if he took a bird into the kitchens and asked the house elves to cook it. He knew that would be pushing the envelope of hospitality.
'Not very Saphricorn and animal friendly of me' He thought with another chuckle, before realizing he had been given a moment's reprieve. Hoping it had gone to annoy one of the many other students floating about in slumber land, he open one sleep crusted eye to look at the clock on his bed side table before letting out a unintelligible roar of indignation. But really he should have known by now, the bird had a half past four in the morning wake up call fetish. Just as quickly as the reprieve came, the bird had returned with a renewed vigor.
Knowing he wouldn't be able to get back to sleep, Jay slowly swung his legs out of the bed, leaving his head on his pillow for as long as possible. Taking a drink out of the glass of water next to his clock that Valpot put their nightly with a 'ever cool' charm on it, Jay looked around his cabin, the windows open allowing the curtains to dance and play about in the cool breeze of early morning. Shuffling slowly careful to put one foot in front of the other he made his way to the bathroom to splash on his face before putting on a pair of basketball shorts and his trainers which Valpot had taken to leaving in the bathroom for him to find easily in the morning.
This had become his now daily routine since his rude awakenings had started. Grumble, slowly ease himself out of bed, then get ready to go for a morning run around the plains. He had yet to see anyone on his morning ventures but had seen many the magical and majestic beasts that roam the plains.
Sometimes he wished the bird would annoy someone else so he could at least have the option of some company. Doing some light warm up stretches on his veranda, while deciding on this mornings scenic route.
Hearing something creak loudly through the silence, Jay looked up ever on the alert, his hand flying to his wand tucked into his waist band.

“Woah, hold up their mate, its just me” Mariana said to him from where she was standing heaving buckets of chaff and Lucerne for the horse stables. It was her task for one whole month to take care of them morning and night, and though she didn’t really mind it one bit, she was a little concerned that this would mean she would not get as much sleep. She did like horses though and knew that if she ever wanted the right to ride one of them around, she would have to perform the usual duties of a plebe and be sure they were fed and watered three times a day, unfortunately this three times a day had to be spread out evenly as well 5am, 1pm and 9pm.
It was not that hard though. The only reason she didn’t really look like she was enjoying it this morning was because it was her third day on the job and she was still craving those extra two hours sleep before getting up for class. Thankfully though, most of the teachers seemed to understand that she would be tired, and once even Professor Saphricorn did not draw attention to her when she fell asleep in class. Well; at least she didn’t until Mariana started snoring. How embarrassing.
Mariana was able to appreciate the presence of this boy in these early mornings. She had seen him on his runs three times already and wondered how he was able to wake so early and be so intent on exercise when quite frankly she wouldn’t be up at this time if she did not have to be.
“Good morning,” she greeted him and then heaved the two twenty-five kilos of bags through the doorway. She had tried levitating them through but they always tried to go through at the same time, and so she had learned by day three just to carry them.
“Do you normally find yourself being attacked in the morning?” she asked him gesturing towards his wand, he looked ready for a fight, well at least he did to begin with.

Jay felt his whole body ease from the tension that had filled it the moment he had withdrawn his wand. He let out a deep rumble of a chuckle.
"Does noise pollution count as a form of attack? If it does then yes I do." Jay replied, tucking his wand back into his waist band. "Oh, and good morning to you too. I see you got stuck with looking after the horses then?" Gesturing to the bags that he saw Mariana holding.
If Jay had stopped to hear himself speak he might have realised that once again he was yelling at the friendly girl just like he done many times over the years with students of muggle backgrounds. His parents did it when they were in conversation with muggles and muggleborn witches and wizards.
"Would you like me to carry one of the bags for you to the stables? You do realise not everyone who gets assigned this job goes strictly do it at the crack of dawn." Jay offered out his hand for one of the bags before just grabbing it when he approached her, not even thinking about maybe he should have gone and put a shirt on, or that in the silence he could hear his voice echo but no noise was coming from any of the other cabins.
"They say to do it at five in the morning but its really more of a loose guideline figure of time"
Hoisting the twenty-five kilo bag up and over his shoulders and giving her his patented grin, not even thinking of simply just levitating the bags from where she had them.
"Lead the way" He announced with a opened gesture in teh direction of the stables.

Mariana smiled ruefully when this handsome interference to her morning schedule started yelling at her again. It was very early, and she knew that if he didn’t wake someone the first time, he might have if he continued to do so, and so she quickly added, “I guess I take some things a little too seriously,” she smiled speaking in a low voice, “And if you don’t mind, I think we better be a little more quiet, before we wake someone, if I cant hear you, I’ll just get you to speak again,” she said to him smiling, there was a twinkle in her eyes brought on by the appreciation of the face this guy was not wearing a shirt, the view from where she was standing was a nice one, and she was suddenly quite awake.
“Thanks,” she smiled when he took one of the bags from her. In truth she didn’t know no one else actually got up at five. She had been told by Professor Saphricorn that it had to be done at this time, and had done it just so she would not get in trouble. Mariana smiled as the boy heaved the bag. She was sure he was the Saphricorn that walked around the castle with a house elf at his heels. It surprised her he knew how to lift. Though he didn’t exactly look the kind of person who never did manual labour.
She smiled at him again feeling herself flush slightly in the face. She hoped this would come off as simply showing the effort she was using to lift the bag she was still carrying. And so she did lead the way. She moved through the dorm house hearing noises of some people stirring within. She was quite sure Jay had woken some of them, but she didn’t feel like caring too much, she was out of bed, why should they not be as well.
Tramping out of the dorm house and across the muddy road that was in front of it, Mariana breathed in the morning air. It was actually quite chilly and she was pleased that she had rugged up. The sun was beginning to rise though and a copper tone fell over the village. The stables were not too far in front of them, and the horses did not even appear to be interested in feeding just yet.
She came to rest by the food trough dumping the bag on the ground when the weight of it became enough to make up for some rest time. She leant against the post and smiled a dimply smile at her new morning friend, “So… you wanna?” she gestured for the troughs, which were fixed to the side fence. She knew she was capable of levitating the bags to fill the troughs, but decided it might be nicer to watch her handsome friend do it instead.

Jay smiled as he walked along side Mariana to where the horses were housed. She did look a little red faced but Jay figured it must have all the layers he assume she had on, he couldn't help but let a chuckle rumble out from deep in his chest.
"You know someone might think that you think its actually cold with how your dressed." Jay said in a teasing voice, his tone was slightly lowered from before but still slight louder than it needed to be when talking to someone right beside him. "Expecting it to snow some time soon or something?"
After walking along there he watched as the girl dumped down her bag and Jay was about to follow in suit when she asked if he wanted to. Rolling his eyes good naturely while giving her a bright grin, as he rolled his shoulder to get a slightly better grip feeling his mucles twitch at the change of pressure. Not that he was muclebound or anything but he was definately not scrawny by any definiton.
"Sure why not" Jay said with another grin moving over to the troughs and untying the string that held the top closed tightly. "So would would you have done if I hadn't offered to help? Lured another unknowing strapping young lad to do your chores for you?"
Jay knew that she would know he was only having a bit of fun with her not like all the other girls he met over the holidays who seemed to take his comments in the opposite way he intended them, whether in a good or bad way. Marianna was more down to earth than a lot of people he knew or had met.
Throwing down the now empty bag he had carried over, as the horses having heard the sound of breakfast were starting to pay a bit of attention and coming closer to where the pair of teenagers were.
"Want to hand me that bag to put in the next trough or would it require to much effort?" Jay gestured to her relaxed posture as she was leaning against the post a few steps away.
This morning was looking better than he first expected when that bird woke him up in its usual terrible manner.

Mariana didn’t mind watching him work at all, it was a lot nicer then doing it on her own and besides, she enjoyed the company. Even though this company was probably just that little bit better then say… someone like Shane, who wasn’t nearly as good looking.
“Well it is something like fifteen degrees lower then day time temperature, how do you not feel it?” she said noticing his skin was not beading with goose bumps. She didn’t mind though, it meant he wasn’t wearing a shirt and that suited her just fine. She smiled at him hoping he didn’t catch her perving.
She watched him roll his eyes at her and go about the manual labour she had set for him, it was nice to see him strain. She even liked the rolling of the eyes and wondered if she might be able to get him to do it again later. ’STOP’ she said in her mind suddenly flushing very red indeed. Where had that thought come from. This was so not like her. She pushed that aside thinking it must have something to do with her still being tired. She was only glad she had not allowed such thoughts to reach her lips.
“Well I can tell you I wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much if you hadn’t come down to help me,” she smiled, not meaning anything by this but showing that she was genuinely pleased with the company this boy… no man, was providing her with. Surely he was of age; he certainly looked it.
“But then, you know, I might have done that, there has been this twittering little bird that has been there to wake me every morning, I always stick my head out the window and thro fruit at it, it gets the gist and flies off to bother someone else,” she said smiling, “So maybe one of these mornings the bird will wake someone up to help me, you never know,”
She lifted the bag with both of her hands and moved towards him where he was lounging back against the post. She tried very hard to keep her mouth shut and the smile she had on her face was mostly painted on. She wanted to comment on how good he looked, but she knew it was not really the time or place. That and it would be terribly embarrassing.

"So that bird does annoy someone else!" Jay exclaimed happily, darting forward and gave her a quick squeezing hug before laughing with relief as he took the bag from her.
Misery always loves company after all.
"You know I was starting to think that stupid bird had some conspiracy going. It flys to my window just before five and I usually yell..." Jay paused then feeling some heat rise to his cheeks as he blushed slightly "some not very polite words that shouldn't said in the company of ladies, then it usually takes off. Then returns two or three minutes later and starts up the same routine!"
Jay burst out laughing again and couldn't help but marvel at how great it felt to be letting out a gut busting laugh this early in the morning and not have to worry about waking anyone up or them thinking him insane for laughing at what seemed to be nothing.
Taking the full bag, he heaved it again and moved down to the other trough, motioning with his head for her to follow him.
"You know after laughing that hard I'm feeling quite warm. I think I've gotten used to the brisk early mornings around here. This is the, what.." Jay tilted his head has he started to pour the new bag out for the horses "twenty-fifth day in a row I've been awake at this time. Although usually I'm running by now, but I think I can welcome this mornings little detour. Its been quite fun" He gave her a wink and a grin before turning his attention back to his task at hand, shaking the bag to make sure all the grain was out of it.
Wiping his hands on his shorts to wipe off the little bit of moisture. "Sorry about that hug before, I might have been a little sweaty from warm skin cool breeze combination we have going on this morning"
As the horses approached for their breakfast, Jay picked up the discarded bag, and put his hand gently on Mariana's shoulder to guide her out of the pathway of the now hungry horses to their breakfast.
"Careful, we should probably get out of the way before they realise its just grains and not something tasty like pancakes" Jay said with a soft chuckle not that he thought he had said something funny but now he was thinking about some pancakes.

“ANNOY!” she started probably a little louder then she would have liked, “I have never wished bodily harm to an animal of lesser… intelligence?” she said but then stopped a minute to consider what she said, “Well… an animal anyway, I have wished bodily harm on plenty of Ruberagon’s in my day, and I suppose they are creatures of less intelligence, would you agree?” she smirked. She hated Ruberagon’s. Especially that new Ruberagon; Barnak.
“It does that to me too,” she laughed realising it was no accident these two were here together, it seemed they had been chasing the bird back and forth between their two windows. She thought this was funny enough to hack a bit of a chuckle, her dimples showing in full bloom when she did.
She could have purred when he hugged her if he hadn’t caught her by surprise when he did, she was also willing to let it slide that he was a little slimy; it was nice enough all the same. She blushed horribly when this happened and had to look away out of embarrassment.
“Do you run everyday?” she said not really caring about the answer as it was quite obvious he took care of himself to some detail. Speaking of details her eyes slipped and she eyed him off for a little bit pretending not to be open about it. She was sure at any rate that he had not caught her looking at him. And if he had, he didn’t seem to show it. “I mean just that, running every day… I know the planes are vast… but where do you go exactly?” she smiled with a show of genuine interest.
“No its fine,” she smiled when he had admitted to being a little slimy. She didn’t care, she got in some visual entertainment for the morning, it was only fair that she pay something for it and a bit of man sweat wasn’t really that bad. He didn’t even smell.
When he put his hand on her shoulder again her knees nearly buckled, though not because of any added weight. She realised at this time it might be a good place to leave it off… though pancakes did sound good.
“So are you…” she said as she shuffled back out of the horses enclosure, “Are you going for your run now or….” She didn’t really know what she was implying by ‘or’ but all the same, she would leave the decision to him.

"Generally I've been running everyday since I was old enough to" Jay said with a smile, his shoulders shook a little to keep in a chuckle at the thought of himself at knee height running all over the Rastan Manor. "Although I must admit when I was younger I was usually running away from my tutors or something else equally horrific to a young male!"
Stretching his arms over his head before lacing his fingers together and resting them behind his head, Jay couldn't help but grin at the peacefulness of the morning. He could hear his own breathing, as well as Mariana's, the horses crunching their grain and their occasional snort or shuffling of their hooves. He could even heard some other animals off in the distance starting to go about their morning routines.
"Where do I go when I go running? Um, well if you've ever followed the East boundary up to the North corner there is a little secluded pond area, lots of trees and grass its just a nice place to relax before turning right around and coming back." Jay said with a shrug as he followed her out of the enclosure, closing and securing the locking mechanism before turning back around to face Mariana, who seemed to look a bit flushed but Jay thought better than to point it out to her.
He was a little troubled by her remarks on the Ruberagon's. He knew a large majority of the non-pureblooded students thought ill or resented the Ruberagon's but Jay didn't understand why. Considering had come close to almost being one and after spending six years analyzing what in him was strong that relates to Saphricorn over his attributes that suit Ruberagon.
"You know not all Ruberagon's are as evil as most people perceive them to be. I could have easily just have been one of them." Jay said with a small shrug of his shoulders. "They just have act on the beliefs that are instilled in most purebloods from birth. I think Society is sometimes just as much to blame as the individual"
Jay looked out over head a moment lost in his thoughts of how unfair it was people seemed to get grouped in catergories but something you can't even help.
"I still have enough time for my morning run, I guess" Jay said, in a lighter tone and topic. "I have nothing better to do this time of morning. What about you? Horses are fed what is next on the agenda for today? More sleep perhaps..."

At once Mariana’s mind was filled with images of a little toddler running around a house with its bare bottom bouncing while a mother tried to catch him. She reminded herself that Jay was a pureblood and a wealthy one at that and so her minds image altered to one of a little toddler wearing a wizards hat and running bare bottomed through a very large and extravagant looking house while a hoard of house elves chased him. She couldn’t help but chuckle. She had no idea what Jay might have looked like when he was a toddler, but she thought the image of him in her mind was cute too.
“What other scarey things have you been running from?” she asked him with a humorous expression on her face. She wasn’t sure whether she should breach the topic but she was dying to know, “Running away from girls perhaps?” she smiled trying to maintain a look of finding a laugh more then one of express interest, “Or is it that you allowed one to catch you at last?”
She thought she had been very clever at asking him whether he had a girlfriend. She thought this was a good tact and would wait for his answer without actually seeming incredibly interested in it. She watched him put his hand behind his head and tried very difficult not to express how much more she enjoyed looking at him with his upper body strained as it was.
She narrowed her eyes a quite forgot how good he looked when he started on about Ruberagon’s. Surely he knew, just like everyone else, what a lot of people saw in Ruberagon’s. They had been nasty to Mariana since she had come to Koalingo, and society or not, she believed it was a cop out to think a Ruberagon had no say in the kind of person they were.
“I don’t think you understand them as well as you think you do, Jay,” she said to him. Her tone becoming a little hurt that he would stand up for them. Why would he care if people liked Ruberagon or not. They didn’t seem to care. If they did they might be nicer to people.
“No Ruberagon has ever called a Saphricorn friend, so I think you better think about the topic long and hard before you think about befriending, or sticking up for them out of acquaintances,” she felt hurt. There was no better way to put it. She didn’t like that he was sticking up for them. They had picked on her since she started at the school some time ago.
With this she knew things had completely died for her. She had no interest in pursuing the topic or any conversation with Jay Rastan; lover of Ruberagon’s. “I’ve got something else to do… see you around,” she said turning her back on him and walking back to the dormitories.

"Hey Mariana, don't be like that!" Jay said chasing after her at a jog, he had to admit she was able to walk pretty fast.
Jay knew that more than a lot of people despised Ruberagon's. Understandbly they weren't in the running for the nicest people around by a long shot and Jay knew he couldn't blame their attitude on society but he did think they did suffer a bit of a uncalled for beating because of a reputation caused by older generations.
Jay was unable to catch up with her, or maybe rather he decided it was best if he just gave her some space to mellow out in since he didn't understand what had caused the sudden change in her. They had be laughing and joking about like old friends and then she suddenly had something else she had to do at five thirty in the morning.
Jay could be sometimes called dense when it came to girls but one thing he did know was that he had upset Mariana unintentionally.
"I didn't mean to offend you or make you mad. Really!" He called out at her retreating back before he lost sight of her behind a building.
"I'm sorry" Jay said ever so softly after releasing a huge sigh, knowing that she probbaly couldn't hear him.
Deciding to clear his head owuld be best, Jay turned on his head and sprinted off as fast as he could leaving dust unsettled in his wake.
