Rubin was sitting at the Ameraid table considering the universe. He had come from Astronomy that evening wondering about certain things and how they affected other things. The study of the stars interested him incredibly and he only wondered why he didn’t see others getting into the class, there were so few people in his class. He wondered of perhaps others thought it was just too difficult. ’Probably.’ came his own answering thought.
His dinner appeared in front of him and he looked at it with mild curiosity, he wasn’t really that hungry, but it was a chicken roll dripping with gravy, it looked really good so he started on it slowly, wondering if it would build his appetite as he continued. He put out his hand and a glass of orange juice appeared. He drank from it and then looked to the textbook he had brought to dinner with him.
“When Mars and Jupiter aligned, it meant that there would be showers in Bangladesh… how did that mean anything to him, unless he wanted to be a muggle weather man, this would make for some interesting insider information.

“Actually, I believe when Mars and Jupiter align, peace will guide the planets, and love will steer the stars,” Lachlan said with a completely serious expression on his face. “It’s the dawning of the age of Aquarius” he said, matter of factly. He was of course quoting a song from a muggle play.
Lachlan’s father was a Wizard, but his mother was a muggle. She was an actress in stage plays, and while this made her kooky enough for her to be okay with the magic in their family, it also meant Lachlan had unfortunately been brought up with a lot of show tunes. Thus, he could not resist toying with his Ameraid friend, who probably had no idea what he was talking about.
He sat down next to Rubin and dropped his book bag on the table in front of him. Lachlan had not attended the astonomy class that night, he’d been off studying in the library, for they had a Divination test the next day.
Looking over to what his friend was eating, he grinned as the same thing materialized on his own plate. He had to admit, his friend had good taste, though he would probably substitute the OJ for some caffeinated soft drink.

Rubin laughed understanding his friend’s quote immediately. This was not due to any knowledge on the play where Lachlan got it from, but more for the link that existence between all Ameraids, which allowed him access to such information without actually having to make an attempt for it. He smiled.
” Let the sunshine, let the sunshine in, the sunshine in” he said slowly and with almost no tune to it. It was more of a demonstration of the link that existed and he understood at once where it came from. “Unfortunately the sun doesn’t shine during astronomy as it is generally night time when we do our star gazing, so the sun shining into my telescope would likely send me blind,” he smiled at his own joke. It was not particularly funny, but funny enough for him.
“Spoken to her yet?” Rubin started without actually mentioning a name. He knew Lachlan would know who he was talking about, if not the name of the girl to which he was referring was easily accessible should he wish it.
He forked a particularly large and dripping piece of chicken and raised it to his mouth. He smelt the piece before putting it in his mouth. A habit a lot of people thought was odd, but was also a habit he was not about to drop anytime soon without making a conscious effort.

Lachlan gave a deep sigh that showed his answer, though in case his friend had missed that, and the negative vibes that eminated from him, he shook his head, his moderately long hair falling about his face. He hunched over his roll and took a savage bite, chewing a few times and swallowing.
“I can’t seem to get her alone. And.. I become really stupid when I’m around her.” This was most distressing for Lachlan. He was an Ameraid, so he was naturally very intelligent , and he had proven he was most definitely not clumsy, being awarded Quidditch captain this year. It seemed whenever he was around this girl his legs turned to jelly, his stomach knotted up and his brain turned to mush. He was definitely not enjoying the effect she had on him.
“Hopefully she’ll be at the Three Broomsticks tomorrow night,” he said, knowing she was Muggle-born and so wouldn’t be able to attend the dueling. He only hoped she hadn’t made plans with any Emerindyls to stay in the castle that night.

Rubin looked at his friend and knew his worries and issue and reservations as quickly as if Lachlan had plugged himself in and installed it all in his mind. Rubin knew this was a sore subject for him, but likewise knew that he had to buck up or he was going to let time pass by. Not that Rubin was anything to go on. He had not had a real girlfriend since… well that wasn’t important. But all the same, he knew that Lachlan had until the end of the year, and then what? He and Holly would never see each other again unless they made plans to do so.
He thought on this for moment and knew that the same could be said about anyone he knew from school. Anyone he had never gone out of his way to talk to. And knew that if he didn’t talk to the ones he wanted to, then he would probably never see them again.
’It’s a little daunting perhaps, but you know if you don’t do something about it soon enough you wont have the chance to,’ he said mentally without moving his lips or even looking at Lachlan. He did not think it would be appropriate for anyone around them to hear what they were talking about, and so he decided to have the conversation this way instead, “Can you pass the salt?” he asked verbally as if covering up their conversation altogether.

That was the good thing about being an Ameraid, nobody got to hear your conversations if you didn’t want to. It was of course handy when you were around people who weren’t telepaths and you wanted to have a private conversation.
Lachlan nodded as he passed the salt, though the gesture had nothing to do with the salt shaker, he was nodding in agreement to the statement posed by his friend via brainwaves. He took another bite of his roll, but didn’t feel very hungry anymore. His stomach was churning at the thought of Holly and his good mood had gone several minutes ago.
It wasn’t supposed to be this hard. It was supposed to go girl meets boy, boy likes girl, boy asks girl out, girl says yes. But so far, all he’d managed to do was meet the girl and like the girl. The two last steps were quite a deal harder. Perhaps that night would be his chance.
“I’m going to go for it,” he said outloud, “I’ll ask her out tomorrow night if she’s at the pub” he grimaced, trying for a smile.

Allora was looking for a diversion as she entered the Golden Hall. She had heard that Rubin might be in here and she was eager to get away from Aurora for a little while. She moved across the hall quietly in line to get to the Ameraid table. She spied Rubin and Lachlan and hesitated for a moment. There were two of them, which meant she would need to protect her thoughts a little stronger then she normally would have needed to. It wasn’t that she didn’t feel up to sharing, but more she didn’t … feel up the sharing.
She arrived at the table and swung her legs over the bench sitting next to Rubin as she came to rest and started on her food. She was not all that interested in the food on her plate, which was probably why it was only oatmeal. She had noticed that whenever she sat at the dining table in a distracted mood, she would always end up with oatmeal and water. This was probably due to the fact that she did never eat it and knew the oatmeal and water could be fed to the cow she saw in the kitchens when she visited recently.
“Morning boys,” she greeted them purposely leaving off the word ‘Good’ it seemed that they both appeared to be in a similar sort of mood. Well at any rate Lachlan appeared to be in the same sort of mood, and everyone knows misery likes company.

Rubin looked at Allora when she arrived and understood at once that she had her own issues, and so he knew she would have no interest in the issues of others. Not that he planned on betraying Lachlan’s thoughts to her anyway. So he started on his meal as if this was his only focus for the moment.
“You seem out of sorts?”
It was an obvious question and he knew after he said it that he could have used a little more tact, but it was enough for him at the moment. She had interrupted as close to a heart to heart as male’s ever got, and he didn’t feel all that accommodating at the moment.
“Something wrong?”
He was being pretty short with her, but as she had her mind closed to him, he could also take this as an insult. He rarely closed his mind to his fellow Ameraid’s, as he knew it could be construed as being an insult, and he was in no hurry to begin insulting those he spent most of his time with.

Lachlan wasn't really interested in Allora's misery. He was feeling rather self centred at the moment, and he felt immediately that she'd blocked off her mind to them. He felt that this action spoke much louder than words and showed that she didn't particularly want the two of them to know what was on her mind.
Taking a swig of the orange juice that appeared on the table as he thought about it, he sighed deeply. Girls were odd creatures, and he was incredibly glad he was not one of them. He didn't mind having them as friends, often they were quite fun to be around. But the girl in question, a certain Emerindyl, was turning out to be quite a handful. Still, there was always that night, for he planned to go to the Three Broomsticks, where he knew she'd be. If only he knew how to make an impression...
He looked to Allora out of the corner of his eye and wondered whether to ask her what was wrong, but Rubin seemed to have it under control. Instead, he gave her a mental poke as if to say what she was doing was rude.

“No everything is just fine,” she scowled as she looked at him, it was not his fault she was in this mood but she did not appreciate his obvious sarcasm and so thought it was appropriate to direct some of her anger at him. She reached out a hand and a glass of orange juice appeared. She scowled at it and it changed to ribena juice. She picked it up and considered throwing it at Rubin for no particular reason. This consideration fizzled after a moment without much else.
She smiled forcibly after a moment more and looked at Lachlan, so he thought he would prod her did he? She then thought it might be appropriate to strike back with something more then a nod, but then stopped… what was wrong with her? What was her problem?
“Sorry,” she apologised to both of them, though she did not lower her guard. If she was feeling such strong feelings of anger, she didn’t feel it appropriate to share with those whom had not caused her an issue.
