Mariana rested her head on the table totally disinterested in the food before her. So much so that when she tried to will it from the kitchen, the house elves were so confused by her thoughts that all they sent her was a bowl of orange juice and an empty glass. She looked into the glass mournfully as if someone had just delivered her the biggest blow of her teen life.
The day had started out so well, but no, it would not finish that way. Precious Pure Blood Prefect Boy Jay Rastan had to go and lecture her about how Ruberagon’s had it hard and how she didn’t really understand them. Well she thought he was pathetic. She didn’t like Ruberagon’s one bit. They were always poking fun at her nose, her weight, her… well everything about her. And Jay Rastan had the audacity to stand there and tell her she didn’t understand them
It was too much. Really too much. When did the world start revolving around the Ruberagon’s just the way they all thought it did. And since when did a Saphricorn student accommodate this belief. It was… it was strange. Some would go as far to say, unnatural.

"Cheer up charlie," Melanie said to Mariana as she sat down next to her fello Saphricorn. She didn't like to see her friend looking so upset and Saphricorns did not like to be unhappy. Melanie nudged her friend with an elbow and slid an open chocolate bar across the table to under the other girls nose. It was half eaten, of course, but the thought was there.
"Ruberagons got you down?" she asked simply. This was usually the issue most Saphricorns had when they were upset, the students in other houses sometimes made fun of them and laughed at them a bit, but the kids in blue weren't stupid, really. Most of the time they chose to ignore it, but when one of them was upset like this, they tended to band together. United they stood, and all that jazz.
"Who said dumb and what was it about?" she asked, hoping to get a bit of information out of the other girl.

“Cheer Up Charlie, Give me a smile, What happened to the smile I used to know Don't you know your grin has always been my sunshine; Let that sunshine show...” It was quite a strange thing to see a sixteen year old both crooning a softly sung song to one of the girl’s in his grade, though no one really understood the Saphricorn’s and so Shane didn’t really care if anyone was watching.
He had followed Melanie into the Golden Hall and had heard her tell Mariana to cheer up, though without thinking what else he could do to help this happen he thought; ’why not’ and had started singing almost as soon as he was within earshot.
“Whats eating ya?” he said taking the chocolate car and taking a bite out of it before putting it back down in front of Mariana’s nose. It was so tasty he considered taking another bite but knew Melanie would probably see this as him overextending his welcome. So he merely sat there, willing another chocolate bar through the table. He started on it immediately.

“Jay Rastan!” Mariana spat with fury and the half eaten chocolate bar went flying across the table from her, “He’s pathetic, he seemed to normal, a little different then what you would expect from a Saphricorn but I didn’t… I couldn’t have thought… I just don’t know why he would say such things,”
Obviously getting the straight story out of Mariana was going to be difficult. Who knew what she was on about or what Jay Rastan had said. To an onlooker it might have appeared that Jay Rastan had insulted her personally. Though as Mariana thought about it, that was kind of what he did do.
“Oh the bleeding heart for Ruberagons,” she said sending a spiteful look at the Ruberagon table though they were two tables over and wouldn’t have seen the look she was giving them. Not to be too confused, her current animosity was definitely for Jay Rastan, though the Ruberagon’s had a bit to do with it. Mariana didn’t need to explain why she didn’t like them. Everyone knew it. They often liked teasing her about her nose, her weight, and her muggle born heritage.
“Its just ridiculous how anyone could think that way about…” she sneered again this time catching the eye of one of the Ruberagon’s as she had been talking in a heightened volume and they probably wanted to know what for, “Them,” she finished.

Melanie tried not to laugh as Shane finished the words to the song she'd been quoting. It was from a funny muggle movie she'd watched when staying with a cousin. There were a few witches and wizards in her family, but they were mostly muggles and so she knew a lot about them.
"What did he do?" Melanie asked sympathetically as she reached over to pick up the chocolate bar that had ended up on the other side of the table. Mariana didn't seem to appreciate the gesture, so she unwrapped the rest of it and shoved it in her mouth.
It was unfortunately typical of Mariana to be upset by something Jay Rastan had said. Everyone knew how she felt about him except Jay, it seemed. It irritated her to see her friend so frequently upset like this, but she was not going to interfere. Mariana probably needed to sort this out for herself, but for now, Melanie would be a sympathetic ear.
Should Jay ever say anything to her though, she would not be able to control what she said to him.

“Whoa, sounds pretty bad,” Shane said as he quickly decided he didn’t have the balls to stay and hear this one out. This was chick stuff, and as he was not one of them, he thought the best thing he could do around now would be to take off. He just wondered how he might be able to do it without looking like he was indeed running away from something he could not really handle…
“You know what, ladies, so sorry to do this to you, but I just remembered Professor Saphricorn wanted me to help her do prep for her next class, we’ve got to capture some nifflers from the planes and take them down to the farm,” he grimaced for affect, he didn’t want to be here to watch Mariana cry, it all looked so messy and definitely not something he wanted to get caught up in.
“So yeah, terribly sorry, but I gotta run,” he said sitting up straight and standing. He thought about this as he moved from the Golden Hall at flank speed. He did not think the girls would understand that he had run out on them, but really it was for the best.
He didn’t really know what he would be doing with the rest of his morning, but whatever it was, it could not be worse then listening to girls bitching about boys.

’Typical,’ Mariana thought to herself as she watched Shane run from them as if he was afraid that being a part of the conversation might cause his extremities to fall off. ((I’ll let you think about that one)) she looked down when Melanie asked her what had happened. She wanted to tell her, but she didn’t want to make a spectacle of herself. Well that was a bit of a lie. The more people that understood Jay Rastan was a wanker; the better it would be for her and everyone else who might think he was actually a decent person.
“You know what he said to me? You know what he thinks of Ruberagon’s?” she said in a voice slightly higher then she might normally have spoken. “He thinks they’re great now, doesn’t he? He thinks the snot that comes out of their nose is worthy of praise,” she said; overreacting of course but wasn’t that a girls prerogative?
“How could he…” she muttered as she laid forward again. How could he think Ruberagon’s were so great? They were a mark on the face of the world.

"Typical male," Melanie said in frustration, talking about Shane. However, her comment was also relevant to Jay and so she moved the discussion along.
"You know, sometimes I don't even know why he's in Saphricorn, he certainly doesn't act like any of us. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever even seen him smile. He is such a downer" she said, picking the uneaten chocolate bar off the table from where it sat in front of Mariana. The other girl hadn't touched it by now, and though Shane had taken a bite out of it, it was still perfectly edible.
Munching on it, she pondered the subject of males for a moment. There was nobody she really fancied at Koalingo, the Saphricorn males were more like brothers to her, and the other guys at the school... They just didn't understand Saphricorns. Or made fun of them.
"Totally insensitive of him," Melanie said through a mouthful of food "But don't give up, he'll eventually get the message" she smiled in earnest.

“I don’t think he can ever come back from this one,” she said knowing full and well she meant it. She didn’t like Ruberagon’s at all, and he had insulted her by telling her that she should go easy on them, “What Ruberagon ever went easy on me?” she burst out as if finishing her thoughts verbally. She didn’t like the Ruberagon’s who did?
“Jay Rastan does,” she finished her thoughts verbally once more, not really understanding that this would make any sense to her friend who was now focusing on the chocolate bar. Mariana suddenly wished she had one, but ignored anymore that might have appeared through the table at this thought, “How can he be like this?” she repeated her thoughts from earlier, she was actually close to quite liking him.
“You know he struts around like he is mister self righteous Saphricorn poster boy, damn it and we all know that if he was anymore not like us he would be… well someone else,” she said, unable to collect her thoughts as fast as her tongue collected her words. She didn’t mean to be like this, but it was so much easier then trying to get over it.

It was hard when her friend talked like this. There were jarred sentances that seemed to be the end of thoughts and Melanie almost never understood what she was talking about. Melanie popped the rest of the chocolate bar in her mouth and scrunched up the wrapper, putting it on the table and watching in amusement as it dissapeared.
Her usual response to Mariana was to just nod when she got in a mood like this. She'd been suffering the idiocy of Jay Rastan for quite some time now, and Melanie seemed to be the one Mariana came to with those issues. It wasn't that she minded hearing about it, no, not at all. she just couldn't understand why her friend was chasing a boy who never seemed to be nice to her. Oh well, it wasn't her place to butt in.
She patted Mariana on the shoulder and made a sympathetic noise. She really didn't know what to say or do, except just to listen to her fellow Saphricorn dutifully, as she always did.
"He certainly does strut," she agreed, thinking of an altercation she'd had with the boy recently. "And I think someone was on drugs when they sorted him into our house," He really irritated her, but she couldn't figure out why. Maybe it had something to do with Mariana's feelings. Or maybe it was just because he was so darn un-Saphricorn-y.

“You are right of course,” Mariana thought as she stayed there, lifting her head at last as she knew she could not mope about all day “I‘ll get over it, never mind,” she smiled before turning to watch a replacement chocolate bar appear in front of her. She promptly grabbed it; peeled back the cover and chomped down on it, enjoying its chocolaty goodness.
“Thanks for listening,” she smiled knowing this would seem a little random. But then again, which Saphricorn wasn’t.
