The look Jay was giving Mariana made her slightly uneasy. Not because it was a daunting expression, or one that she feared but for the hold it had over her. She was entranced by it and had to give herself a mental kick to stop herself from not listening to what he was saying. She had always thought he was handsome, though there was something more in this expression. Something in this look that made her simply stare back into his eyes.
She wasn’t sure how he would react to her talking about the previous day. She had been told by Professor Saphricorn to be aware of any ‘interesting peculiarities’ about Jay’s caracter and for a moment she realised that this conversation could go two ways. He could tell her to butt out, as would be his right. Or he could tell her how he was feeling and allow her to warm to him.
She didn’t know which of the two she thought were more likely. He had after a;; proven in recent times that he could be incapable of understanding her as a person and would often sprout off things that made him feel better about himself. That or he would hex her, something he had also done recently. Though Mariana understood he did have the right to tell her to butt out, but also decided that if he was to have that reaction, that would be the end of any possible friendship between them.
“All of us must choose our futures when we are seventeen, Jay,” she laughed a light laugh that was not meant to insult, but was hopefully warm enough to let him know that she perhaps did not quite understand what he meant, “All of us come to the cross roads in our life when we must make the decision between what is now and what is to come, from there, as you are aware, all of us will age, all of us will make the choice between what is right, and what is easy,” she smiled at him and started playing with a leaf of lettuce which was not for eating but there to decorate the basket in which strawberry’s, mulberry’s, and cherry’s. She wasn’t particularly interested in eating them, but the conversation was a lot deeper then she would perhaps have been prepared for this early in the morning and it was nice to have some degree of simplicity about her.
“I don’t think anyone can ever make all of those decisions at once though,” she agreed as he elaborated, “But then what sort of people could expect that from anyone?” she said knowing almost as soon as she said it that the answer might not be one she was prepared for. She looked up at him and considered this for a moment. If someone asked her to know the answer to all of those questions when she was seventeen, would she really know? “But then, you know, there are people who get a great length through life and still do not know what they want to do with there’s, look at this place for example, I think I heard somewhere that the founders were all quite old before any of them made the decision to open a school,” she smiled, “And I don’t know it of course, but I don’t think any of them were teachers before that,”
It was a very uneducated guess, she realised, but the moral to the story was very much so on mark. She knew Jay perhaps thought he did need to know the answer to all such questions by the time he was graduating but how could be? ‘You know though,” she started again as she picked up a handful of cherry’s and ripped the stalks out of them. She tipped them into a bowl and sat it in front of her.
“When you are faced with so many things that you need to do,” she said as she looked at the Cherry’s, unable to keep eye contact with him any further, “Then isn’t it usually best to tackle them one at a time?” she picked out of the cherry’s and held it up to the light, “You might choose what you want to do when you graduate even before you are sixteen, a lot of people are like that, you know, that is why they choose the subjects they do for their final years,” she showed him the cherry while she talked, “It might seem imperfect, but for the moment it is your best option, so run with it,” she smiled and popped the cherry into her mouth. It was not nearly as tasty as she thought it might be and so she quickly raised a napkin to her lips and spat it back into it, “Then again, some times we don’t make the right decisions,” she rolled the napkin up with a smile on her face and deposited it upon Shane’s dirty plates.
“But just because it was a wrong choice, we shouldn’t be deterred from other attempts,” she smiled and grabbed another cherry, “Some options don’t look as appealing as others, “She was focusing on the imperfections in the cherry’s which only helped her story that little bit more, “But sometimes they are exactly what you need,” she popped it into her mouth. Unfortunately this one was also sour, though to prove her point, she swallowed it as whole as she could.
“See?” she smiled pretending the juicy after taste in her mouth did not taste as foul as it did. She held her smile strong and looked back into his eyes, so deep and fascinating they were, and she found herself again entranced by them.
She laughed again when he mentioned the dragon, and watched the letters burn when they arrived, she smiled and grabbed all of the cherry’s in front of her, still not deterred from eating them, “We could all be eaten by dragon’s tomorrow,” she held her hand to her mouth and poured the remaining cherry’s in, she chomped on them, happy to finally achieve the desired affect, together the sweet and sour ones made a nice balance.
“But then, if we were going to be eaten by a dragon tomorrow, why should we stop living today?” point made.
