The chill night air whipped at Jack’s face as he moved through the night. The broomstick he was astride was not a particularly good one, though it was the best he could come up with at short notice. The Quidditch store in Koaltumut always had the cheapest brooms on display when it was closed, and this made them quite easy to steal. Jack would repay them later, but for now it was of no moment, he had a task to complete.
Climbing the mountain he looked out over the countryside. There were flecks of snow touching here and there, though it was not the snow that interested Jack. He knew that beneath the silence and the cover of darkness something much more sinister was brewing. He had spent his entire life looking for the lair of the Guild of Avada, but he had never succeeded. Sure he had been taken there a couple of times as a prisoner, but even then he found there was no way he could retrace his steps to return. He knew it was close to the castle though, too close.
He had not chosen to take the road back to the Manor. He was indeed heading in the direction of the castle, but tonight he would need to be much more vigilant. He could let no one know he had left the duelling club early. His father had not yet competed, which upset Jack as he had only gone to see his father duel. Unfortunately for him there were other evils to contend with.
The castle came into view and was for once, not a beacon of hope but a target that turned his stomach. He had been anxious about this moment since all things had begun. This would be the moment in which history changed the futures; a moment when all things would split away into an alternate reality, one foreign to him, but designed by his grandfather.
“Keep it down, Jack, keep it down,” he said to himself as he flew over dried out trees and whispering grass as long as he was tall and as golden as the sunlight it reflected during the day. He was not referring to volume though, he was being very quiet, and the coaxing of keeping something down had to do with a discussion he was now having with his stomach. It had been churning since he left the Blood Lust nightclub, and it would not settle.
“It is sad that this is the only way,” he said again as he pressed on, gaining speed as he did. He could see the many braziers atop the castle wall burning brightly, flames licking the night sky and casting a warming glow around the Manor’s boundaries. Jack raised his hand and held his fingers in a particular pose while he whispered words that could not be heard by anyone no matter how hard they listened.
A light shimmered atop the castle wall. It was a very brief shimmer but Jack’s eyes caught it and he smiled a little. ’At least that worked,’ he thought to himself as his broomstick reached the wall at last and he flew over top of it. He knew that without the incantation his grandfather had provided him with, he would not have been able to cross the boundary, without going through the gate, and tonight he required that element of surprise.
He touched down with soft steps on the cold stone courtyard of the entrance area of the Manor. For the moment no one was there, which worried Jack just a little. He was precisely on time, and had hoped Audrey would be there already. Or perhaps she was? Lingering in the darkness while they awaited their target.
His anxiety was all that kept the icy burning sensation in his nose from overcoming his other senses. The cold night air did not agree with it at all. Jack rubbed his hands together and cupped them over the end of his nose as he waited. Silently. Pondering his next move.

Audrey had been waiting just inside the entrance courtyard. She had seen Jack appear and fly down towards her, but had not made a sound or movement. The only reason she had seen him was because she had known exactly what to look for. She saw him looking around for her and was pleased when it appeared he could not see her. She had an invisibility cloak on, as well as a charm that shielded her from prying eyes. As well as that, she had placed a shield charm around herself, and placed noise barriers around the courtyard. Nobody would be allowed to see what was to happen tonight.
As Jack had flown over the wall, she had muttered an incantation under her breath, one that was much too advanced for an eleven year old, but she knew it nonetheless. The incantation was a spell that worked almost like a forcefield, protecting the courtyard from intruders from the outside. The only was in was from the front door or the castle, and those that were already in the bubble would not be able to leave until the removed she spell.
She was nervous, of course, her stomach was churning and had been since the conversation with Jack that morning. There was a large task ahead of them, and the thought of it was daunting. The worse thought, however, was that of what could happen should they not complete the task tonight. Her job that night was to make sure Jack did his. He was to execute the plan, and she was there to back him up should something go wrong. Nobody knew they were here and secrecy was of the utmost importance. She quickly went through the list of spells she had in her mind, making sure she remembered all the ones to take away the charms she’d placed around, and erase all traces of her and Jacks magic.
Convinced they were all correct, Audrey pulled off her invisibility cloak and allowed her husband to see her. She placed the cloak on the ground and walked over to him. Her legs were stiff, yet shaky, for she’d been standing in the same place for at least two hours, maybe more.
“Are you ready?” she asked simply, knowing he would know exactly what she was talking about.

“I didn’t get to watch it, the others took too long to finish,” Jack muttered as he looked to Audrey and felt a little more grateful for her presence. He did not look forward to what he had to do, and though he was displeased he did not get to watch his father duel, he was ready for what he had to do, and glad for her support.
“He should be here soon,” he said as he looked at her. He looked sad though he would not need to tell Audrey that this was more for what was about to unfold then for the fact that he had not seen what he went to Bloodlust to see. He would have to cherish memories of the event, for they were all he had.
Jack let the broomstick fly away back to the Quidditch pitch, he had charmed it to do so without his attendance and started rubbing his arms. His waqnd was already in his hand and he was looking up towards the Entrance Hall above the giant sized staircase. “It’s ten thirty isn’t it? He should be here in a minute or two, did you want to move to a safe distance?” he asked her as he considered what was about to occur.
He knew they had all of three minutes before their target arrived. “It is definitely his name on the list right? Definitely him, and the book he is carrying, we’re supposed to burn it afterwards?” he knew this was exactly what he had to do, but it was easier asking her, because when she said he was right, he felt as if this was in fact the right thing to do.

“That’s a shame honey,” Audrey said, taking Jack’s hand and squeezing it gently. She was referring to Jack not seeing his father duel. She was sympathetic, she knew how much he had wanted to see the match, but at the same time she knew she must keep his mind on the task.
Audrey turned to look at the entrance to the castle, knowing where their target would come from. She had only a few minutes left, if her calculations were correct. She pulled him close to her and wrapped her arms around him in a hug and kissed his cheek. She had few words for him, but hoped this small gesture would give him a bit of courage. The task ahead of Jack was a big one, much too big for a mere 11 year old. However, Jack was.. different.
“Yes, it’s him. It’s definitely his name on the list, and he’ll be here at any moment. I know it doesn’t seem like it Jack, but it’s the right thing to do. We know the consequences of the alternative, we can’t let it happen. You can’t let it happen” he reassured him.
It was time for her to go “I’ll be over there,” she pointed to a dark corner “I have faith in you” she finished simply. She would be waiting in the shadows, making sure he did what was needed of him. If not, she would have her wand ready to follow through.

“I cannot believe I did that,” Mariana was telling herself off as she wandered through the entrance foyer and started down the giant sized staircase on her way back from the common rooms. “Getting up at five o’clock in the morning to feed horses… well I can understand if I am too tired to do it every morning, but really Mariana, to forget to do them again at five o’clock in the evening, that is just… what would Professor Saphricorn say,”
She was moving slowly letting each footstep thump the ground upon the surprisingly icy feel of the Entrance courtyard. Usually it was warm no matter what time of the day, and tonight it was also darker then usual. Mariana would have admitted to herself that something weird was going on in the Entrance Courtyard except that she was so pre-occupied with getting back to the Three Broomsticks and to her friends, that she didn’t want to dwell on the creepiness of it all.
She still had a mountain to climb down.
“I don’t know how you every expect anyone to take you seriously as a member of the Saphricorn house if you don’t show that you care about the animals as much as everyone else does, that is what it means to be a Saphricorn, Mariana, and you just forgot to feed the lot of them,” she cursed herself even more, utilising the echoing of her own voice to stop her from feeling as if this was all a little wrong. It was then though, that in her little tirade of insults directed at herself, that she realised she knew something was definitely wrong.
“The braziers are out,” she said as she stopped in the centre of the courtyard, which was darker now then she had thought it was when she first walked into it. She had moved through this courtyard so many times in daylight that it didn’t seem so dark when she first walked down the stairs. Though now as she turned around, she could see the lights behind her in the foyer were also out.
“What’s going on?” she said as she backed towards the Ameraid fountain. She realised all she could see now was the outline of the walls against the meagre light directed from a cloudy moonless sky.
“Hello?” she shouted as she heard movement. She could see no one, however and stopped dead. She looked around and thought she could see a figure standing a couple of metres in front of her.
This was certainly not right.
“Who are you?” she said as she looked towards the figure and her legs immediately carried her backwards a little, “What do you want, what are doing here?” She continued backwards until a cold feeling hit the back of her neck and ran the length of her spine. She had walked backwards into someone else, someone who didn’t appreciate it one bit.

“Little Saphricorn’s should know it is not right to be in places they should not be at times they should not be there,” a drawling and mocking sing song voice came out of the darkness as a cruelly twisted smile came into view. Finnias was on an errand for Avada Kedavra, and had found for her something she was sorely hungering for. He would be exalted for this fine work tonight, everything had gone to plan; the castle was almost completely empty, and in his book was now clutched a scroll with information on it pertaining to something he had discovered for the dark lady.
He stepped closer with his wand in his hand. He flicked it carelessly at Mariana sending her wand flying from her hand to where it clattered on the stones of the courtyard behind her and out of reach. He had no intentions on taking a life this night, but he would be exalted for the act. This was a mud blood, and while Avada did not care for the purity of blood, he knew this would bring up many questions about the mud bloods demise, and it had been so long since Finnias had killed.
He smiled mockingly knowing how his brother might feel about the death of a Saphricorn; he would welcome it, and though Andreas had no knowledge of Finnias links with the Guild of Avada, he knew that many Ameraid’s would see no issue in the death of a stupid, pitifully ignorant Saphricorn. He raised his wand and a green light began to glow at it’s tip, lighting up his face; his eyes were hungry for death and the adrenalin that coursed through his body made his heart raise and a feeling of utter euphoria come over him.
“Langlock” he muttered knowing this curse would cause Mariana’s tongue to stick to the roof of her mouth, this would stop her from screaming for help, which would ultimately allow him to jeer at her some more; have a little more fun with her before he took her life. He barred his teeth in malicious glee as he watched for the horror that would soon show in her eyes. Should he tell her what he had planned for her? How exciting would it be to see her reaction; knowing that he days were now coming to an end, and that there was no one there to stop him.
“I am going to murder you, Mariana,” he said to her, using her first name to betray all she might have thought about the comfort of those who knew her. He had seen her many times, and knew that speaking her name would be all the more torturing to her mentality. He moved closer, the green light on the end of his wand reflected in his hungry eyes as he moved the wand from her throat and aimed it at the point between her eyes. When he caused her this pain, he would do it with the happiness of a child with a new pet.
“Crucio!” he barked as his wand erupted taking a hold on his victim.

“Little Saphricorn’s should know it is not right to be in places they should not be at times they should not be there,” a drawling and mocking sing song voice came out of the darkness as a cruelly twisted smile came into view.
Mariana’s eyes, which had initially continued fear, soon held anger, what was this Ameraid thinking of, scaring her like that, she had half a mind to box him in the mouth for it. She was just in the course of screwing her face up with anger and preparing to yell at him when she noticed that he had his wand in his hand, and the look on his face; there was something about it that made her falter.
When her wand flew from her possible grip, Mariana ‘s face changed from anger to confusion, though she still wanted to say something to him, the look on his face worried her a little. The sound of her wand clattering on the stone in the distance brought a fear to her heart. Why had he disarmed her; if he had been a Ruberagon she’d have thought he was just teasing her as always they had, but for the fact that it was an Ameraid, there was something so much more sinister about it.
“What are you doing?” she said to him, knowing this was a rather stupid thing to say, though for the moment her head was not really in the right frame to think of anything more constructive. She looked at him with confusion and a sign of hurt that made her wonder if he could sense that she was getting upset. She knew Ameraid’s had the ability to see more with their mind then they did with their eyes. A talent she wished she had at this moment, as she could have used it to find out what was behind that wicked gaze.
“Langlock” he muttered
Mariana felt her tongue stick to the roof of her mouth and her anger began to build again. Ruberagon’s had performed this one on her plenty of times, and though earlier she might have been more frightened then annoyed, she now realised that Finnias must just be doing this to her as some sort of joke. She didn’t appreciate it one bit and was just mustering the strength to walk towards him and hit him when she hear him open his mouth and utter words she would never have expected to hear in this or any other life time, especially not from An Ameraid seventh year.
“I am going to murder you, Mariana,” he said to her,
She faltered again, all of her strength failing her. She was a pretty tough girl normally, though she felt her stomach heave and her legs wobble. This was not happening, not to her, what was he talking about. If this was a joke it was surely cruelty beyond anything any Ruberagon had thrown at her in the years she had already been to Koalingo before this one. Her eyes reflected that hurt and she stayed immobile harnessing most of her strength to keep her upright.
”Crucio!” was the last thing she heard before a pain struck her body with such fury that she thought she was dying instantly. She fell back onto the ground, but the pain of the stone hitting her head as she fell was nothing to that which now coursed through her body. She shook violently as she contorted. Her back was arched and her limbs flailed about helplessly as she screamed a silent scream in her head as she could not do so verbally. Things were growing darker then they had been before. And she knew it. She knew it well.
She was dying.

”What are you doing?” he heard Mariana say to the figure before her. Jack knew it was Finnias Mark. He had known for a very long time that it would be, and had found it difficult to pass the boy in corridor’s and between classes knowing what he was about to do. Knowing that this would change the course of the world from now and into the future. Things would all be different from this point. He knew it, Audrey knew it, though he also knew he could not react a head of schedule. Things had been calculated so perfectly, and he would not be fool to mess with the calculations made.
“Langlock” he heard Finnias perform the charm and waited with bated breath. So this was why Professor Mandelstein; who was in the green house not far from the courtyard; did not hear what was happening right here under the sight of no one but himself and Audrey.
A moment passed where Jack was sure that Mariana was beginning to think things through and realise what was happening. He watched Finnias and knew that the boy was merely teasing her while he prepared to do to her what he would never have the chance to. Not if Jack could help it. He watched for some time as Finnias jeered at the girl, it was an artform Jack only knew the Guild of Avada to have. To further torture someone in the last moments of their life before they would deliver them to death. Jack thought it was cruel, but not at all unusual.
“I am going to murder you, Mariana,” he said to her,
Jack saw the affect that this had on Mariana almost instantly. He expected as much and knew that if he were in the same position he might have reacted similarly. Except that it appeared she was all but giving up, where as he would never allow Finnias to have the pleasure of seeing him shut down before death took a hold on him. He waited. He knew what was coming; it was all dictated to him. In a moment Mariana would feel a sense that would alter the course of her life forever.
”Crucio!” Jack heard it issue from Finnias mouth.
Jack waited. That was all he could do.
His instructions were clear enough, he had to let Finnias perform the Cruciatus curse upon Mariana, that much he was ordered to allow to happen, and knowing what it would amount to he had no interest in stopping it from occurring. A little evil for a lot of good; he had heard it explained to him like that, and so he allowed it to happen.
He watched with interest. He had never seen the Cruciatus curse in action, and he found that it’s results were interesting enough. It appeared that Mariana was in a lot of pain, a great deal of it in fact. Jack watched her curiously knowing that he would have to allow the curse to go on as long as Finnias had attempted to perform it. He watched the Saphricorn with interest, he wondered how one felt in such a predicament.
He waited in the darkness, Audrey not too far from him, ready to force him into action if he failed. He found that at the site of the pain forced onto Mariana, he was renewed and the energy and motivation for the actions he was about to perform were filled to their limits, when the time came, he would know exactly what to do, and he would perform it without hesitation. He watched on and waited; not eager but not with any hesitation, at the right moment, he would do what he needed to do.
He waited and watched and thought about his next move. It would be swift and it would bring the night to an end. And for his target, it would bring life to an end. He looked at Mariana and Finnias as he stepped into view. He was no longer the eleven year old Finnias knew him as, but stood there as a man of thirty-two. Much taller, hair as gold as the flames that had licked at the sky from the braziers before the darkness had consumed the courtyard. The cloak he wore was a deep green trimmed with gold. And the look on his face was full of determination, as he looked at the seventeen year old boy and the sixteen-year-old girl.
“Avada Kedavra” he uttered and the figure before him was struck with a green light, and before the body hit the ground it was already dead. Jack looked at Finnias and shook his head, “Avada will find more excitement in this action then any dread you might have believed in,” he said before he reached and felt the pulse of the girl and stood shaking his head.
He knelt at her side and began to move his wand from her head to her toes and felt a pulse shimmer through the air that would soon alert others to their presence. He knew he had to get out of there.
“She will be fine,” he said as he lifted Mariana into his arms looking carelessly at the body of Finnias Mark, “A pity it had to come to this,” he opened his hand and the scroll on the ground flew to him and disappeared with a pop.
“Leave the body,” he called to Audrey, “Lets get Mariana out of here before serious damage is done, I can tend to her wounds, she will be well enough by morning to pretend this never happened,” he said as he carried the girl up the giant sized stair case and into the castle, assuming Audrey would be right behind him.

Audrey had watched the scene play out, balancing, ready to spring into action should she be needed. She knew she wouldn't, she knew Jack would follow through, but she was there, watching, waiting, just in case.
The whole thing had been unpleasant, though she'd prepared herself for that. Watching Jack kill someone had never been something she'd enjoyed, even as an adult. But it had made her feel better to see that the Jack that killed the young Ameraid was not the boy of eleven Jack Russell, but rather the man of thirty-two, her husband, Jack Emerindyl.
She knew what he had done was the right thing. They'd had their instructions, and this was for the greater good. It was a pity that this young boy had to die though, and she knew the school would be in mourning the next day.
Audrey stepped out of the shadows as Jack picked up the Saphricorn student and waved her wand, reversing all the charms and spells she'd put around the courtyard. Her magic would be untraceable to most, and those that could make the connection would hardly believe it had been done by a first year Emerindyl.
She of course did not realise that as she stood there the same changes had happened to her body, and any onlooker would see Audrey Emerindyl, a grown woman.
"Leave the body" her husband called to her as he moved away. She nodded slowly, though she was unable to take her eyes off the lifeless body of Finneas Mark. She moved over to him quickly and knelt down, brushing her hand over his face, gently closing his eyes.
She stood and brushed off her knees, turning to follow Jack without looking back again.
